I just found something interesting. I found that there was nothing in Video Clips in the file manager. The problem was the directory was not ".video" rather it was ".videos". Once I renamed it, MediaBox was able to see all of the videos in that directory.

And I'm almost comfortable enough with the MediaBox interface that I am considering uninstalling Canola (for the disk space) and pulling mplayer out of my personal menu...

Thanks for your help!

Okay, so add me to the list of recovering Canolaholics. I do confess that it took me an unusually large amount of time getting my mind wrapped around the user interface but I am really getting to liking Media Box. Great job and thanks.

So I followed the advice here about setting up a playlist containing all my tracks so I could shuffle my whole library. Works great. Except the playlist contains the image files from the cover art I brought in from my pc. And this causes the playback to stop when I get to an image.

I tried setting up my libraries with no video or images in my music directory but no luck.

About the only thing I really liked about iTunes was their star ratings and smart playlists. It was pretty sweet to be able to rate a song and have it automatically added to a playlist. Do you have any plans to head in this direction?

I also think it would be really nice to have more play buttons in the menu's. For instance being able to hit play on a library, or an artist. This would provide and alternative to playlists when you just wanted to play something quick.

Anyway thanks again. Canola is a distant memory and fading fast. And I am also blown away by the speed and quality of the video.

Cheers, Bill

None of mine have images, but here is a way you can do it:

Code:
cd /home/user/MyDocs/.sounds
/bin/ls -1 *.[om][gp][g3] | while read x ; do
echo "file:///home/user/MyDocs/.sounds/$x" >> /home/user/.mediabox/playlists/myplaylist.m3u
done
This assumes you have mp3 and ogg files and that they are in /home/user/MyDocs/.sounds. If you have other formats, or just want to omit the .gif and .jpg files, you can substitute the

Code:
/bin/ls -1 *.[om][gp][g3] | while read x ; do
with

Code:
/bin/ls -1 | grep -v jpg | grep -v gif | while read x ; do
Anyway thanks again. Canola is a distant memory and fading fast. And I am also blown away by the speed and quality of the video.

Yeah, I too did the canola uninstaller and am running mediabox without a net.

Oh, pycage, one more request. Since you seem to be using mplayer on the backend, can you retain the key bindings from within mediabox? For instance, using the space bar to pause and the directional keys to forward and back...

mplayer is not the only backend and I want to have common keybindings among all backends, so the mplayer keybindings are disabled.

But this doesn't mean that there can't be any keybindings. E.g. the key on the D-Pad pauses. The keybindings are defined in /usr/lib/mediabox/components/input/maemo.input and can be extended.

This ASCII file maps hardware keys to virtual keys in MediaBox. There are keys for all sorts of actions and hardware keys can be mapped to these actions depending on the current context (browser, player, menu, etc.)

pycage,

Another question. Am I missing something on the play/pause behavior? I was using the N810 as my mp3 player today, and I tend to listen to a lot of podcasts. Well, I was jaunting around town, and whenever I stopped, I would pause playback, generally so I could take my NIT in with me. However, when I got back in the car, and hit either of the play buttons (the one at the bottom or the one on the media icon), invariably it would start at the beginning of the track. This is all well and good when it is a song, but when you are 1:15:00 into a 2 hr mp3 or ogg, it gets old.

Is this behavior adjustable? Was it a design decision? or am I just missing something?

Thanks,

This is because the media backend shuts down after a while when not in use in order to save battery. The osso-media-server backend still has problems with properly resuming after that. The mplayer backend handles this better.

Ok, cool...Makes sense. Is there any danger in changing the backend to mplayer? How much of an impact on the battery will that change have?

I, for one, rather like MediaBox. I don't understand why you say "it is too late in the game." Its never too late for a well-done application to be improved.

One of the things I like about MediaBox is that it will play a variety of media. I can play video, audio and images from my local machine, as well as nominally youtube and other internet video sources (though I haven't tried this functionality...)

And while the interface is, on the front end, a little bit more to get your brain around, once you start using it, it makes sense.

Just my 2 cents...Keep up the good work, pycage.
