Care to define failure?

Well the forum is about Maemo nowadays, wouldn't it be a little odd to miss out the only current-gen Maemo device ?

I don't think Apple has failed with neither their iPods nor their iPhones. The best thing, in my opinion, is their ability to work right out of the box.
They sync seamlessly, and they have a great support both from Apple and from 3rd Parties.

I agree that there're many things which should be better (and a lot better), like their closeness, single-tasking or the fact that you have to use iTunes to get the best of them.

I own a N800 while my brother has an iPod Touch, and I was quite disappointed to see how his device got better with time than mine. Ok: my main disappointment was due to the lack of PIM software, and I more or less managed to get over it (but that's another story).

However, I'm happy with the tablet . It's a hacker's device, and I learned a lot since I have it: I wouldn't have learnt so much with any Apple device.

However, I was asking how do you define how had Apple has failed. I was genuinely curious and you have to overlook my correction - I'm assisting a friend with her classroom paper corrections.

It was not intentional. After three days of this, I've corrected even my 7 year old son's homework as such.

they don't have (and never had) one single product that would meet my (most basic) requirements. they just cannot get it right. no matter what they try.

that's how they fail.

I wouldn't agree. Apple's sole purpose isn't to please you. Apple is trying to make products that reach a certain audience. That audience is computer illiterate, easily entertained, media freaks. And they do it very very well.

Most of us are not in that audience, we are more hacker types. So we want more from our mobile devices. That's why there are different tablets and different OS's. So whatever your needs are, you can get a mobile that fulfills them.

anyway, i wasn't talking about apple's purpose, its place in the universe. my statement was about what could be my next device after the N810, specifically meant as a reply to bummer saying his would probably be an apple. so when talking about what i would buy, what would meet my personal needs, i felt it was rather safe to rule apple out by saying they failed to deliver anything of interest for me in the past so my hopes for future products (tablet?) are low.

so yes, it was all about pleasing me, nothing else.

i never thought that using the words "fail" and "apple" together in one sentence could lead to such an uproar even in this forum. it really must have become a religion meanwhile in certain parts of the world.

That's fair. Even though I had a few iPods before, I switched to the Zune. And the main reason I have an iPhone now... they were given to me and I turned down the iPhone 3GS waiting on a suitable replacement.

I do use Macs in my current development environment though. Especially since I do a lot of Adobe Flex/Flash development - something I can't do via the IDE in Linux (not using the Flex Builder that is) but could do via the commandline via the Flex SDK if I so chose.

But your assessment is fair. It's from your point of view. And from my point of view, we'd disagree. I wouldn't call them failures at all. Not exactly what I would call the best option either though.

In fact, for the last few years, I've been distancing myself from AIX. IBM is keenly on my "failure" list if given the same criteria as you had used for Apple. OS/2, AS/400, PowerPC and now AIX... they're not doing too well with me based on your criteria.
