don't see why not..something like the "extgps" program on symbian. however, running the gps all the time is a sure-fire way to make sure your battery is dead as fast as possible in my experience

Maybe the new chips are more efficient /shrug

I'm sure there's probably a way to script something that would turn on the GPS, update it, then turn off. Running in the background would just be leaving it on..

Maybe something that updates every 30 minutes or hour..

Laughing Man, yeah, that might not be a bad idea. Last known location combined with satellite drift information would help the locks go faster. Plus your idea would work well too, so long as it didn't eat too much battery, as texaslabrat pointed out that the GPS does if left running all the time.

from what i understand, this is something thats called "warmboot" or there about, and will only work if the location your stating up the gps in is relatively close to where you shut it down last time.

if not, it will go thru the warmboot, not find the sats it expected, then throw away said data and start over from scratch, just like when it was first out of the box.

and no, this is not a-gps. A-gps is about getting basic location info from the mobile carrier, calculated based on what antennas your handset can get into contact with, And then using that to quickly look up what sats to expect. I guess one could say its stacking GPS on top of skyhook...
