Take it with a grain of salt. Delays may happen.

I really just want to be able to to read/write out eMail/SMS using the keypad and t9. I know this is old school, but it is great when you are getting off a plane and have your other hand full.

Agreed, but not just that, anytime you're carrying a bag (shopping) or suitcase or laptop bag, or in my current situation, using a crutch after a sports injury. Holding onto a rail on a bus or train; browsing while eating pizza or fried chicken, and I do this a lot with my Blackberry at the moment. You can go on and on.

I would say email/SMS and browsing would be the main things I'd want in portrait mode. Perhaps the media player for music - after all most people keep their phones in their pocket in "portrait mode".

We will appreciate the good stuff, but a lot of smartphoners and reviewers are going to ding the N900 due to no portait- especially since not for texting. Browser will be second.

Sales WILL be hurt due to this. Why omit something that will constrain your sales from the start? Nokia made this device in part to expand their consumer base for this level of device.

Should have been there out of the box IMHO.

I don't think many of us can wait any longer, even if it is to implement portrait mode...!

Let's hope for a rapid firmware update.

what about the hacked together rotation plugin for the N8x0 NITs, could that not be modified to work for maemo 5?

Agreed! I think part of the problem is this product evolved with consumers into something bigger and the apparently large, non-tech consumer interest has really caught Nokia off guard.

Had they knew the N900 would "cross over" to a lot of smartphoners, the device would have portrait mode for almost everything

You think so? Nokia could not have been blind to the fact a device with a form factor popularized by the iphone, with a bigger bread basket of functionality, stronger stats than any competitor that it would not cross over from geeks to dorks and mainstream consumers. Look at the early adverts. They were people going to concerts, and sms'ing, using location tools to find friends etc. there was no one doing a 'gotomy pc' or ssh'ing into their server.

They are getting what they asked for. We are getting what we asked for

Maemo 5-Fremantle, as you know, inherits many design choices from previous Maemo devices, like the N800, and those were designed with landscape mode only. So, while one may like or dislike the decision, it is reasonable that is the default mode for Fremantle.

Also, one of the biggest goals for Fremantle is to provide a stable an uniform user experience.

So, the making of a good experience for portrait mode is a big and complex task, which may or not be done for Maemo 5.
