Personally I much prefer the N900 designation to some kind of proper name, but whenever in the past Krisse and I have disagreed about what the masses want, Krisse has turned out to be right and I have been wrong!

The N900 might well be a very cool bit of kit but the name is, like so many of Nokia's, very difficult to remember.
It doesn't help that there are already older and totally different smartphones called the N90, N91, N92, N93, N95, N96, N97, and even if there weren't "N900" isn't exactly memorable. It doesn't conjure up any kind of imagery in people's heads, it isn't exciting, it doesn't sell itself at all.
Could someone at Nokia please give the next Maemo device a proper name, something that people can remember easily?
Or am I the only one that feels this way...?
And you know what you are getting from 8xxx, 9xxx(if they would still make them)or 5xxx.

I think this depends of the culture. Americans tend to like names like leopard or eagle. Europeans feel comfortable with N900. When you like something it’s always easy to remember.

On one of the Nokia videos around the time of the August announcement, a Nokia employee specifically states that the N900 was named by the community.
And indeed, we did use that name here over the past year and a half as a placeholder for the "next Maemo device after the N810". And Nokia decided to give the device the same name that the community was already using. Or maybe Nokia was going to call it that anyway, and decided that it was a nice thing to say.
Sorry, I wish I could remember more specifically who said this and in which video, but the phrase "named by the community" stuck in my mind and I'm quite sure about it.

Nokia sometimes does names, for instance with the Nokia Twist. Then again, the Twist is the name for the operator to distinguish/sell the device (Nokia 7705 in this case). Some operators like to control/determine the names of the devices they are selling to their consumers. Having the original as numbers probably makes it easier to brand it with names, than trying to rename existing.
Otherwise you can easily run into the EOS/Digital Rebel confusion: multiple names for the same product in different countries. Numbers are much more universal in that regard.
Probably also for a company making '40' different devices a year, coming up with 40 number sets is easier than 40 new, non-branded, non-protected, not offensive word in any language -names every year.
But ultimately it's an endless discussion.
