already voted twice for the USSD bug
You are probably referring to https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5357 as USSD bug. Although from the comments in the "other comments" section it is clear that there is a misunderstanding of USSD and SS, the fact that this bug is not purely about USSD but also about SS which is CLIP, CFNRy, etc ... is not followed up.
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5380#c4 which was very clearly including SS (in the summary) was closed as a duplicate of 5357, which in turn was assumed to be only for USSD. So the only way is to revive 5380 and probably mark 5357 as a duplicate see comment 42 for interpretation https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5357#c42

The SS you are looking for is Call forwarding on no reply "CFNRy" (61). Type **61*Number_to_forward_to**45# as phone number and press dial. If you get an error bring the 45 down to 30, since the allow max time is network dependent. Since *# is not working you need to put the SIM into another phone, run the above and change back to the N900..... hope it'll work out.
cheers when i get near a phone i can slam me voda sim card in i will try that

I guess this package already exists. At least I installed it from Extras (probably -development). It is "callforwarding". This package add additonal menu in settings....

I agree with you that SS is different than USSD in mobile terminology, but from a mobile OS perspective, they're exactly the same, the OS needs to send a certain string in the SAME FORMAT over SDCCH. Thus for the developers looking at the second bug report they will close it as duplicate, cause for them it's one problem, sending codes that start with * and end with a # over SDCCH, regardless whether it was structured or unstructured.

I hope you agree with me here

In principle I agree, but there are also some codes which are not passed through to the network (like IMEI). The comment #42 implies that Nokia indeed distinguishes between supporting USSD and SS commands... let's see if they reply on the last comment. I hope you are right
I just really want to set my diverts and use my phone book entries with CLI codes .... keep fingers crossed

I hope so, cause this bug is VERY VERY MAJOR, it needs to be resolved quickly.

Callforwarding in extras-devel.
For Install:
1. add Extras-devel repository (info http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-devel)
2. Go To: Download > Utilits> callforwarding

Program will be available: Menu > Settings > Call Forwarding
Some screen shoots:
