I wonder if it is more to do with streaming vs local. I was playing a video I'd re-encoded (stupid 720p limitations ) from a web server that I had setup, and it would restart if I paused and switched away.

Interestingly enough, Kmplayer with the "osso" backend does not do that.

i was playing the videos locally they are videos i downloaded from the net using zoutube app for local playback

Slight back-peddle from Nokia there then. They clearly show in the promo vid's for the N900 the movie '9' being sent back to the task manager and playing.
