This wasn't even in the release firmware, what are you blabbering about?

Edit:

Disregard that, it actually is a feature present in the release firmware, just a undocumented one.

The feature described in this bug report is the ability to perform gestures on the virtual keyboard. The most useful gesture is (was) "swipe up" for capital letters: You tap on a letter and swipe up instead of simply taking your finger away again. This equals Shift+letter.

The bug report documents that this feature has intentionally been dropped. For no apparent reason. The reason given doesn't sound valid:

"The gestures have been dropped so the FKB allows the users' fingers to be dragged through the keys.
This new behavior is much more useful to input chars using the FKB since it will allow fast typing (user presses two places at a time) as well as correction"
I think this refers to not something like Swype, but rather a change in the behaviour so that the letter is committed with the button up, not with the button down.

i.e. if you intended to press on W, but pressed down on Q instead, you don't need to go and press backspace, then try to retype the letter; rather you can just slide your finger on W, then release. (Like the iPhone keyboard works, I think.)

You can argue that there's some use for that.

Edit: Yes, rather than just me speculating, why not test this. Yes, that's what the change is.

I agree, seems rather pointless. Granted I didn't even know about this feature, and having just tried, am releaved it's there. This is a very useful feature at present.

One feature I think would be nice is a soft on off quick switch the VKB. Everytime you tap in a place input is possible, you don't necessarily want to input anything. With the soft key you could quick disable and enable the VKB through the stasis area.

Wrong area for the idea I know, so I'm just blabbering.

So it's nothing reasonable. Just another Nokianism.
When you accidentally press the wrong letter, most of the time you'll not even notice untill two or three taps later. You don't go "tap-check-release-see letter". It's "tap-release-tap-release-tap-check word that's suggested from dictionary-tap on word or continue hammering in letters". So when you first look up if the word you typed is what you wanted to type, no swipe action in the world can correct the mistake you made three letters ago.

But then... maybe because typing will be generally slower without these gestures there'll be a chance to notice a wrong tap before you take your finger away.

BTW: In the Finnish Language, You don't use capital Letters as often as we do in German, do You? You might not realize how important the "Swipe up" is until You actually type in a Language that uses capital Letters not only with Names and at the Beginning of Sentences, but whith every Noun and even with Pronouns and Adjectives, depending on the Context and on Rules of Grammar. I'd say for each Letter that could be corrected with a Gesture, there are 10 unnecessary Taps on Shift that the current Implementation saves me from doing.

For those of use that's unfamiliar with Swype, this sounds like a pure headache.

I also type in German sometimes - trust me, my German is so darn rusty that I need to stop claiming that I even know it - but yeah... that could get tiresome if I'm reading what benny1967 is saying correctly.

Does anybody have video of this feature in action?

try to start with capital letters. assuming you have an english or similar keyboard layout, tap "b" and then make a movement up as if you wanted to drag the "b" between "g" and "t". if it didn't work for you before you probably didn't swipe far enough. the gesture is not recognized if you only move a few millimetres.

old folks like me know it. it's an old maemo thing that was there since i don't know when... i think even the first maemo version on the nokia 770 had it. it used to be in the manuals IIRC. the fact that the N900 manual doesn't include it should have been an early warning.

if you like this feature, you can still vote for the closed bug. it's probably useless, but... what else could a user do?
