For the users who can dish out some cash to achieve this, they can buy Movavi Video Suite for approx. 50 euros. The powerful program comes not with just a converter, but so much more.

Check out the trial version at movavi home page: www.movavi.com

I've been using DVD Catalyst 3 from tools4movies.com for a long while - originally for my netbook, and with my N900 for the last few months. They have a very good free version (DVD Catalyst Free, referred to as a trial, but has no restrictions) and a $10 version that adds more tools, editing functions, and additional presets, including two for the N900. It's easy to use and has worked great for me in Windows XP. Some DVD's have stronger protection that won't convert (I've run across just two so far), but the upgrade has a free available plug-in to help on those.

I would recommendation is, formatfactory. it allowed you to convert anything to anything you like. My n900 works fine with it. formatfactory is free open app.

simply changing the setting resolution to 848x480 and that's it. Click start and walk away!

I dont know why someone wud wanna convert anything considering the n900 play mostly all formats!
Sounds really stupid to me.
Yeah u cud argue abt the quality, ratio etc etc hw u want it to be so perfect but really n900 does the job as it is, If u were watching it on a plasma/lcd i wud understand.

I use FairUse Wizard. Though the program isn't free, they do have a "lite" version that is, but I'm not sure what the limitations are...

I've been using it for several years now. Very simple to use. Rips directly from DVD's to Divx/Xvid files (you get to set starting/ending points, bit rates, target file size, resolution size, audio format/bitrate, etc.)

I've encoded several movies just for my n900 and have had no issues whatsoever...

Ah, another FairUse fan. I haven't been able to get its h264 encodes to perform at all on the N900. I have switched to Handbrake and used the presets available on the wiki (but turned off the screen=resize option, squishes things badly) and have gotten consistently working results.

Do you have any templates you could share for H264 and FUW? It;s kind of moot, sinve HB is doing the job, but just to satisfy my curiosity.
