you dont have to start over unless you have some faulty software that you downloaded from one of the repositories and the update says you need to connnect to NSU or flasher.

the updates work great....dl them and then they install and your unit is updated.

otherwise, if you clean boot, just go to your good backup that you created and restore from it. you should be fine.

The Backup software in the N900 AFAIK only backs up small things such as program settings, contacts, etc ... But how do I backup *everything* ?? e.g. music, videos, conversations, all the settings, all programs installed .. ?

I mean this way, everytime Nokia rolls out an update, we would have to start using our N900s completely from scratch .. ?!
I don't know, I wish I did

No thats not the problem .. I dont have any faulty software installed .. I just dont have enough space in the partition in which updates are downloaded ... I just need to know how to find out what is taking space in that partition, so i can empty it out ..

you probably have software installed that is using your rootfs space. the last update required about 40mb there.

Try the following command in X-terminal to see all three partitions:
df -h / /home /home/user/MyDocs
There is a space between the three folders "/", "/home" and "/home/user/MyDocs" in the command.

this will show you how much space you have on your rootfs.

I read that the 32GB internal storage isn't touched when the firmware is updated. Is this correct?

I don't think they would just wipe the storage just because of a firmware update.
