The n900 changed my mind for me. I was NEVER going to buy another Nokia phone after my horrible experience with my N97. The N900 is what the N97 was promised to be. With all the apps in extras, testing, and devs, I can see where the device is going and I like what I see. Just make sure you know what your needs are and do the research.

Oh and the thrill alone of going to an AT&T store and at least 10 people(including iphone users) ask to check out your phone is always a plus!

Coming from the Droid, its OS has more "bells and whistles", as well as many more apps. Aside from the USB port coming out of my first 900, I have had no software issues with either of the (2) 900s I've had...both working perfectly. I was able to replicate my Droid's "functionality" with a handfull of basic apps available in the maemo repositories, "a month ago"...several more apps available now, and the 900 had a little more functionality "out of the box" than the Droid.

That said, the Droid was a little more feature rich than the 900...not sure if it will change, however as far as browsing, built-in Skype/SIP calling, what I think is a better calendar, and connectivity platform, I prefer the 900.

In a nutshell, the 900 does all the basics well, and does them "basically" (i.e. no frills). Android is not without its issues however...native email client is still having problems from what I can tell (e.g. messages not delivered, duplicates, etc). One thing Android has going obviously, is its widespread acceptance, and more 3rd party software support. But again, I'd rather have a phone I can take to Europe, gets better reception, and has TV-Out vs a few more apps that I may/may not use.

Get the N900 I have had no problems at all, had the wifi freeze once but other than that I probably haven't restarted the phone more than once every couple of weeks which for something as complicated as this shows that it is very stable. I have had the browser get upset twice I think but it tends to close itself down and works when you open it again. Downloading free software couldn't be easier and over the air updates are fantastic. Haven't had to plug it into a computer yet apart from to move over some Divx and MP3.

The tv-out feature was part of my buying decision.
I had looked at Android phones but the above point swayed me as well as Google "knows everything about you".

iPhone has more entertaining apps(?) but I think the n900 is more practical and more useful.

I used the n900 to write this post and still a joy to use.

Oh the iPhone is overseen by a "dictatorship" and MS Windows mobile is seriously out-dated.

As a phone its working well for me, except when I confuse myself by forgetting that I have my Bluetooth headset turned on and trying to answer it normally. The Skype integration is very well done.

For everything else, it has worked well given the amount of alpha (extras-devel) and beta (extras-testing) software I've put on it.

The company line here is that the N900 is a tablet with phone capabilities. If you are looking for a phone I would look elsewhere unless you know of a capability that you want and that the N900 can provide and other phones cannot.

I don't think it's as unstable as some of the posts here might lead you to believe but I don't think it's as stable as some of its competitors either.

Maemo 6 will offer something more or different than Maemo 5 but the question is, again, do you need Maemo 6's capabilities or can you do what you want to do in Maemo 5 or another OS. Plus, Maemo 6 will introduce its own problems when it is first released.

Android is not better than Maemo nor is Maemo better than Android, they are meant for different audiences. Maemo has fewer apps but they are generally free and open source software. Android has more apps but not all are free or open. If that matters to you it would be an argument for Maemo and if it doesn't an argument for Android.

As far as capabilities, the Android OS has more money behind it and more developers, especially commercial developers, writing for it. OTOH Maemo is easier to root and imposes less overhead on the CPU so it has the potential to run apps faster. If you do decide on Android, I would look for a phone with a 2.x version available.

Don't buy it yet, well maybe you could buy it on 2010-Q2+ hopefully full functionality.

Also don't buy it because there are many things unfinished, bugs, no video call, call recording etc.

Of course there is a high potential on this, still, nice mini-laptop. but it is matter of time to take advantage of each part of its circuit.

Regards.

I just bought a Nokia 5800 xpress music for my girl and guess?
and talking about functionality it works better than a n900.

I dont care about linux, super pro processor, super big RAM, virtual ram, etc. People just need things working at 100% and 5800 does

If you can, and don't have a reason to get the N900, wait for the next version of maemo 6.
