Unfortunately, the IR control is only for shutter release. The D40 has NO motorized provisions for controlling zoom, and focus will have to be done manually.

This is great: Being a night photography buff I should try this sometime. Thanks zail for this thread otherwise I wouldnt have known this feature.

Again I hope its a full screen app instead of a widget. I dont like having such selective use apps all on my desktop as widgets - too much of clutter I feel: Such selective use apps are better off as apps whcih I can start based on when I need it and not have to have it widgetized on the desktop always.

Hope this is appreciated.

Not possible with the remote. I've read some conflicting information about it when connected through a cable, and never had a chance to try it.

So handy at a pinch, but not something you want to use for anything more than messing around.
Not to mention that the hit area of the widget is microscopic - why not make it a fullscreen app?
I built myself a small interface for it, to add a timer and repeater, that makes it a lot more useful to me. Not sure how interested the author would be in that, or if I should just make my own package, once it's polished a bit more.

Would you guys in general prefer an app instead of the widget?
(even if the widget came with a larger button? :-)

Slocan: I'm interest integrating that.

If the functionality remains as it is now, just a shutter trigger, then a simple button on the desktop is fine with me. But, as you said above, you are interested in adding more functionality, then by all means lets have a full blown GUI.

twaelti - first off thanks for this nice idea and the app (widget).

Personally as a feedback to you and other developers ...
Any application which is used in special circumstances and not very heavy constant usage I would prefer as a application - only because a widget stays on the desktop always using real-estate and also being contrained by space - whereas since I would start this limited use app only infrequently (except of course for prolific photographers maybe) - an app which can be started on-demand is better.

Also an app instead of a widget gives more screen space to design the controls - and of course for your app - a bigger shutter press button would be better.

This is just my thougts on it.

Thanks again.

No. It's just shutter release - just the same as if you bought the Nikon shutter release remote.

I just spent a little while searching for remote control interfaces. It seems that the Nikon D40 can be controlled via cable: http://www.d-software.co.za/ . I wonder if the N900's no-host-mode USB precludes its use as a controller.

[Added:] Moreover, gphoto2 is an open source implementation of a remote control for the D40 and many other cameras.

I think I'd be in favour of an app too rather than a widget ... especially if it gets more functionality
