Well, of course!

Tarkovsky's Stalker is another must-see. Pity that the original cut based closely on the original story by Boris & Arkady Strugatsky did not survive but the second cut is a thing of beauty.

+1 on District 9.

2001:A Space Odyssey is also a landmark film.

-1 on Star Wars. Space Opera is a better descriptor than sci-fi but I won't go in to a n3rd war over this (at least in this thread ).

SW is science fantasy, but there's no reason for semantic arguments or disagreements of whether fantasy really fits in with general sci-fi.
How about Passion of the Christ?
In addition to Stalker, Tarkovsky also made Solaris, which is another good choice.

If you are willing to accept movies outside of sci-fi, and if you want to commit suicide after watching:
"The Seventh Continent" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098327/.

:-)

As I said, I'll try to avoid a nerdfight over SW

You know, I have been meaning to see Solaris (the original, not the Clooney-containing remake) for some time...

Oh, don't forget Sunshine. Some critics said it was boring, but I enjoyed it. Edge of your seat sort of thing, especially certain scenes.
