Not to forget that water and electricity will disolve electrical contacts producing salts to form where the damage is. Water will also disolve the LCD. I've seen many watch screens damaged like this.

Take a look at the service manuals: http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_Hardware_Hacking
There you will find all answers

depends on what you mean by dismantle. if you mean taking it apart then perhaps but if you mean taking the back cover off to see the water mark then no u have not i guess it all depends on where the darn water indicator is located

"no it hasn't"
"yes it has, the water damage indicator is indicating water damage"
"and thats the only way the water the stupid thing would turn pink is it? undeniable irrefutable proof that its gotten wet? couldn't have been acceptable humidity levels or moisture from my fingers when changing the battery or a defective indicator."
"well our policy is if its water damaged..."
"imve told u its not water damaged, the pink square lies! the pink square is the only bit signalling any kind of moisture whatsoever and unless the pink square is integral to the functionallity of my phone, and indeed is what's causing these problems, then i suggest you ignore it, find the problem, realise it has no association to water damage and fix it for me."
"ah well... okay."
what a way to ride them. that makes sense how the hell can they tell you its water damaged if it is not actually in fact damaged by water. that makes so much sense

warranty is for material and manufacturing defects.

insurance is for dropping your phone to sea.

and by the way even if the indicator is intact but some contacts in circuit board are oxidized, nokia can say that device has been used outside circumstances mentioned in user manual....

There's no pink, yellow, other slips.
Water damage is indicated by corrosion on the motherboard. If you drop water there and you can't clean it perfectly corrosion will appear.
Nokia is a great company when it comes to servicing their devices, yes they might be a little hostile when someone comes to them and says my usb port broke. but when they see a lot of people coming with this problem, they realize that it's a manufacturing defect and replace all the devices with that problem.

The USB port problem it's old, nokia should replace it without any problems, if they don't contact their call center, or make a complaint with your Customer Rights Authorities. there is actually an huge topic here about that problem.

In that case Nokia may be wrong to dishonor it's warranty.
I stay on an island, and there's sea all around me, and electrical contacts start corroding in a matter of days.
I can already see some tarnishing near the battery contacts on the N900.
If Nokia were to refuse warranty on this ground, I will surely ask my lawyer to put in a word :P

are you completely sure you haven't used your device in conditions excluded in manual?

Ofcourse, sir I have a very good idea of what operating conditions mean
I do have a humidity sensor at my place, and RH is never above 80 - 85%. The air near sea does contain trace quantities of salt, and IMHO that accelerates corrosion when dissimilar metals are involved. Also known as Galvanic corrosion.
