Yes I know. The strange thing is thst in Sygic 7.60 the maps for Romania are at 99% coverage but those maps are not working with 7.71 and for Maemo is not available the 7.60 version of application. GREAT! Now what is the solution?

Yup, I figured that out today on the road. I upgraded early this AM (GMT -4:00) before leaving the house.

Couple of things I noticed after removing full screen:

Sygic doesn't seem to recognize what orientation you are in when the app is started. That is; if you are in portrait mode and start the app it will start in landscape mode. I have to unmount the sucker and do the shake.

When it does go to portrait mode the status bar moves to the top where you can now get to the dashboard easily.

But, status bar apps (volume, MFE, Availability, Clock & Alarms, yadda, yadda, yadda) are not available.
(This last bit is understandable until Maemo makes some changes. )

Now here is where it gets interesting with -rfull removed ... If, rather than invoking portrait by doing the shake you instead chose the menu option to rotate the display, the status bar with access to the status bar apps is on the side of the display like it was before the update...

I'm glad these guys are making the effort. I'm havin' a blast with this thing.

BTW zehjotkah, thanks for all you are doing dude.

If you can, see if you can find out where the blue "arrow" icon is stored. I would love to make my own to represent the back of my car or suttin'.

I'm checking that mail box now. I didn't see anything after our last posts..

EDIT: Nothing dude. I can't integrate what I don't have.

I even checked SPAM... I got invited to Mainland China

The 8thChina (Guangzhou) International

Environmental Protection Exhibitation

Invite Letter
...but no CVS or OV2 files.

EDIT: EDIT: (I got your second e-mail) I received 3882 Poi's in CSV last night and was able to combine them, clean-up the extra descriptor field, and remove duplicates for a total of 3644 in one file.

However, as I suspected some have "E-07" appended to their longitude. This may have been left by a text editor somewhere along the line and can not easily be cleaned up. In fact, it crashes the program I have for doing this.

If I have time when I get home this evening I'll try something else but in the mean time if you can get me a copy in unedited (and not reconverted) OV2 format from your original source it may save some time.
The descriptors would still have to be cleaned up but the position information would be virgin, dig?

So last night while I was waiting for a POI data base Laughing Man sent me to recompile (and crash, yet again ) I found a way to change the slash screen.

It involves creating a new folder in the Sygic "Res" directory found in MyDocs on the N900 N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Res\skin\others

Open "Res" with the N900's file manager then open the "skin" folder, then open the "others" folder found there. You should see just one folder called mobilemaps. While you are in the "others" directory create a new folder and call it "custom" (or whatever you dang well please).

Now the next part will require an image editor and I used Paint Shop Pro. The next set of instructions are for using a Windows PC (Linux users, being much brighter then us common folk , I'm sure can transpose them to ones that work for them.)

Connect the N900 to the desktop in "Mass Storage Mode". from your PC cruise into the N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Res\skin\others directory where we were on the N900 before. Open the mobilemaps folder and select a file called 1_1.dat. Copy that file (do not move it)to the "custom" folder you created earlier.

Now open that copied file with Paint Shop Pro. You should see something like this:

Change that image's dimensions from 130 x 29 to 800 x 480. Do not change anything else.
It will look like hell but that's not the point.

Next open an 800 x 480 image in your editor that you would like to use as your splash screen, copy that image and paste it as a "new selection into the resized 1_1.dat image. Save your new 1_1.dat image to where it came from N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Res\skin\others\custom.
Close up shop. You're done.

Now cruise over to the settings.ini file found at N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Drive\Maemo

Open that file in Notes on the N900 or WordPad or other text editor on your PC.

Edit the line
Code:
splash=mobilemaps
found there to
Code:
splash=custom
(or whatever you called the dang thing), start up Sygic and enjoy. :headbang:

This is Q & D and I'm thinkin' with a little tweakin', animated Splash screens will also run.

***

For those playing along at home who want to see it in action simply unpack the attached Splash Screen.zip file and put the two folders found there in the N900:\home\user\MyDocs\Res\skin\others directory.

If you change the line in settings.ini to
Code:
splash=custom
...you will get the following as your new splash screen:

A photograph by Anna Nilsson, an artist I found that shares some of the same attractions with me.

If you change the line in settings.ini to
Code:
splash=yodude
...you will get this as your new splash screen:

... and you may see why I think crude animations would work.

Have fun.

... But hey, don't go a hurtin' yourself none.

has any one had any success while tinkering with the Sygic Colour 1.6.2.2 as posted by Dread123?

http://w13.easy-share.com/1701313535.html

I tried showing it the N900/maps directory.. I tried making new folders and naming them to accomodate the Sygic Colour tweaker.. doesn't seem to want to read the .pak files as .bmps or otherwise.

If some one has had some success changing the colours and icons is there any chance of a couple of screen shots and possibly a dumbed down step by step instructions being posted?

Wishlist
  • High contrast UI design as option (how to read white on light blue in a sunny environment? I do not need fancy designs, I need legible ones!)
  • UI design without outlined text (outlines make text less easily legible -- up to unlegible when the eyes are not the best anymore)
  • Screen autorotation
  • Edit: Adjustable speeds used for calculating the time to destination (I simply do not want to drive as speedy as the navigator means I should do to finish my trip in the Sygic's time)
  • Sygic not stopping to navigate while pushed to background
  • Quick access to other programs while in full screen mode (I do not want to move the N900 from the holder first to get the phone or any other application)
  • Faster first GPS fix when no Internet access available (the external GPS mouse used on my previous phone was much faster with the first fix)

PS SygicColors can help a little bit regarding high contrast UI design, but it does not allow to eliminate the outlines. Unfortunately, many of the options specified in application.skin are not read by Sygic, it seems they are only applied when integrated into the corresponding .dat file.

You need to download the whole Res folder from your N900 and point SygicColors to that folder on your file system. (Have a backup copy of the folder before making any changes.)

I did not try to change icons, just colors and fonts. I was even able to add new fonts (just move ttf files into the fonts folder).

Changes occur mainly in the skin folder, only changed files must be copied back to the N900.

For editing: You simply have to try and test. The names of the colors etc. give a hint, what they are for. The tab "Application" is used while there has not been a GPS fix yet and for menu browsing, tab "Navigation" is used during turn-by-turn navigation etc., tab "Browse" probably when you browse the map (have not tested this).

Changing colors: Mark the name of the color and click (or double click?) on the white field between color and font names.

Changing fonts: Mark the name of the font and click on the button [...], mark the new font and click the [Change ...] button (cannot remember what exactly it is called).

By the way: There is no indication of the source of the software. The website mentioned inside SygicColors is off. You must put a lot of trust on this, that it does not do any harm. I had it running in a Virtual Machine only, that was reset after use.
