Agh s@#t Kev,

Sorry to hear that pal get everything backed up on you're memory card.

@EmmaGx

If you cannot charge you're phone at all, you can charge you're phones battery by putting the battery into an N96 or N95 phone it will stick out but as long as the connection are touching it will charge then once the battery is charged you can power up you're N900 and do a backup on you're memory card.

unfortunately my battery died on n900, and just sold my n96 last week on a 'sell your old phone site' so theres no way of me charging it to back up my data

do you lose everything completely when it has been returned from the nok shop?

im currently using an old blackberry phone i managed to borrow off somebody and cannot get used to the piece of crap!

Superglue will be useless. Epoxy might help if you get it into the right places (not easy).

My USB port never became physically loose, but I suspected it was damaged nonetheless.

However, today I wondered if it mightn't be the humidity here in Thailand (I'm a tourist), and so I bought a bag of rice and stuck the phone in it to absorb any moisture inside.

What do you know, it seems to have worked! Well, I use the word *seems* for good reason, but I'll let you know.

My USB port has also now suffered from this. It started out that it was a little flaky in charging up then last night the port itself partially detached from the board. (the port looked like one side had been "pushed into" the phone)

Took it into Nokia Care today and it is now "awaiting assessment by a Nokia technician". Has anyone had experience with Nokia Australia and whether they will cover this issue under warranty or not? (and if its not covered under warranty, what the repair is likely to be and what sort of costs are likely to be involved?)

I am in Perth if that makes a difference to what Nokia Care is likely to do (and how long it might take)

I have a N900 with the dreaded broken USB port problem - not under warranty.

A malicious 3rd party has deleted some important contacts (stored on internal memory, not the sim card). I took the phone to a repair store to fix the port; no luck.

I want to use PhotoRec to undelete the data after making the Nokia an external drive.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to achieve this?

I am in NYC area if anyone fancies their hardware skills...

Thanks,

AW

From memory you need to use the 'dd' tool to image the drive, although it sounds like you've done something similar in part. Photorec I believe is just a case of choosing options, in this case image recovery on the command-line and it'll do its best to discover and recover the known file types. I'm sorry I can't go into more detail, I haven't had to use these excellent tools in a while.

Good luck with it.

According to the Nokia Care people who returned my N900 today, a busted USB port is listed in their service guidelines as "dont even try to fix, just replace the handset"

So I am now on my third N900 (second one because the first one had a broken flexboard/status LED)
