Is Android 2.4 the next 'phone' version?

http://www.androidcentral.com/rumor-...ans-android-24

If this is true (which is may well not be), then it seems that 2.4 will feature 3.0 compatibility.

Very interesting........

Lots of interesting news today!

I'll start with this.

Myriad looks to support unmodified Android apps in MeeGo!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXWEyKjwk2g

This is a very interesting project, which I would guess, would require much of the OS be implemented in MeeGo (including perhaps some kernel modules), but if it can be done, then it would be a boon to MeeGo users and Android developers alike!

I'm still looking forward to Ubuntu/Meego running full-speed inside of Android.

I like projects that are bridging these two islands.

Dell Streak gets Honeycomb port!

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/08/d...like-a-real-t/

Can the Tab be next?

It seems that the community really, really wants honeycomb on their respective devices. This is good, in that there will be a large push to port the OS to many devices.

IMO, this is the first Tablet that competes with the Tab:

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/08/l...nt-optimus-2x/

I really like the form factor, and 8.9" isn't too large. The res is good, and the specs are good as well. The tablet is really, really, thin and includes just the right number of ports.

I'm not mad on the anaglyph 3d display, but I do appreciate the 3d capture. I forsee that many users will typecast this device based on this feature alone.

I *really* like the docking connectors as well. As exposed copper connects, they seem more durable than a plug-in port.

The standard USB/HDMI connectors are a bonus. No more proprietary nonsense and expensive cables.

And the thing seems to come with a small stand. Brilliant.

The only thing missing seems to be the microSD slot, but they didn't show a sim slot either, so it may be under the hood. This is good in that it implies that the battery is removable.

So far, this is my fav of the new tablets.

Hold the phone...

Taylor Wimbly of Android and Me is rumoring that the Galaxy S II will contain the dual core orion.

http://androidandme.com/2011/02/phon...al-core-orion/

If true, then this bodes well for the Tab II.

The Orion SoC is claimed to have an insane GPU -- the first use of the looks-great-on-paper Mali 400 core -- in addition to out-of-order code pipelining. Offering "5x the performance" of the current Hummingbird
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3901/g...-cortex-a9-soc

http://www.samsungunpacked.com/

7" Tab II @ 1024x600 with an Orion, would be a device to be revered.

It's heating up.

EDIT: I just read that Mali 400 will feature 'rotated grid super sampling' for it's anti-aliasing technique. What an interesting way to anti-alias! Basically, it takes the scene and rotates it slightly so that the grid of pixels do not fall directly on the final rendered pixel, and thus are rendered smooth. In other words it offers 4x antialiasing with NO loss in performance. The image quality of games rendered on Mali should be quite high.

Very interesting.. It mentions that the throughput is 30M triangles, which isn't terribly impressive, but as always graphic performance will have to be benchmarked to get an honest representation.

Wow!

It looks like Honeycomb is getting some pro-apps! Here's a video editor on the tablet:

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/02/mov...oid-honeycomb/

It's nice to know that Android is getting some quality apps, and they seem to be ushered in by Honeycomb. Soon, it may be possible to forego the laptop altogether if this continues (for some anyway).

Also, check out the 'quick links' lab in the browser. Very cool interface, and very webOS like. Perhaps this is the way to cram Honeycomb onto phones...

I'll chime in to agree with Dan here.

I understand why on phones, microsd is perhaps a "necessity" but why on tablets? Surely, it should be much easier (and cheaper?) to put a full size sd card slot on a tablet. Heck my N800 has 2.

A full size usb port would make adding peripherals (keyboard, mouse, storage) so much easier. Again, as most tablets are using the same hardware as phones, it should be easy to find space for full size ports.

I'd rather see ports like those than proprietary dock connectors (for docks that never appear or are hard to find) or even video out. I just don't see much use for video out for at least this generation of devices.

It seems that the Android Developer site has been updated with in app billing details:

http://developer.android.com/guide/m...ing/index.html

Very interesting indeed!

I hope other markets also include similar functionality! I'm looking at you Amazon...

Here's a nice free app for Android:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939156

It apparently shows promise, though has issues. Some of the comments on the market are old. There have been updates since then.

There are some REALLY fun flash games. Notably Nitrome games:
http://www.nitrome.com/

It would be fantastic to play these on the Tab. Fantastic.

Ex: http://www.nitrome.com/games/enemy585/index.html

Check it out!
