Small Tip, when i got my galaxy s not long ago the USB charger with that looks like the pins are already filled down well its alot smaller than the N900s usb cord, so im now using that goes in and out easy as.

The USB port of the phone seems loose, but I can't understand why the phone charges when connected to the computer and not when connected to the charger. So, I'm not 100% sure it is broken. Maybe it is a software problem. I don't know.

What do you think?

I guess I should call Nokia support.
Could be a software problem, however other people have reported similar symptoms before their port fell out. I'd suggest backing up your data (maybe use backup menu to create an image so you can restore to exactly as it was when you created the image), doing a full flash to get it in a clean state and see if your problem persists, then you'll know for sure if it is hardware or software.

Hi everyone, I started reading this thread even before buying my n900, so filing down usb connector was the first thing I did when I actually got it...I knew those theet were EVIL!!! I'm wondering if this will be enough to prevent usb port problems or if there's anyone who has ALWAYS been using filed down connector and got usb port broken nevertheless....

I like this device a lot and it's so sad to keep reading about people having problems with it...

I still see no evidence that filing the springs makes any difference.
I don't think it makes much difference to the perp. forces between socket and mainboard on normal insertion/removal.

I notice a new Nokia has both USB-charging, and a 2mm charge socket.

I can confirm this. Both chargers from Samsung OmniaHD and GalaxyS insert and remove much easier.
Until I put my swiss army knife metal file to use on the Nokia charger.
I sold both Samsungs but I still use one of their usb data cables in the rare ocassion i need to connect to a PC.

@myk usb connectors with filed down teeth requires almost no insertion/extraction force. Actually I tried ONCE using a normal microusb connector (I was using a wall charger from a friend) and the force required to pull it off was quite different!!!
Obviously there's no difference as for leverage force if you bend the connector while inserted...you must pay equal attention.

I've had a feeling for some time that there was a software issue that exaserbates a hardware weakness. I need to plug/unplug multiple times to get charging to start.

Charging often "fails" overnight when there is no physical jostling. 2ce this week I've gone to sleep with the "charging pulse" light, only to awaken to a dead battery. (implies software issue)

My USB plug is firm, but brushing the cable will usually cause a disconnect/connect on my PC. (implies hardware issue)

My USB port came out with my cable in January as has happened to so many others...

I understand that as the device was purchased in the EU I have a 24 month warranty, I have clearly had the open and the board removed...

I was looking at performing the cable fix myself as I erroneously thought I only had a 12 month warranty and had a terrible experience previously with my Nokia Care Centre and trying to get my N900 fixed for another problem.

So, I have removed the shield for the part of the board by the camera and USB port to get a look at the connections, I have also damaged the keyboard bezel when handling it. Neither of these affect the usage of the device...

My question is, will it affect my warranty as far as having the USB port replaced...I have look but not touched so to speak? What do you guys think?

Technically, I think, opening the N900 at all will void your warranty (though IANAL). You could try taking it in anyway, but I think they'd be within their rights to refuse any repairs under warranty (and if there's obvious damage to the interior then I'd be surprised if they didn't).

Filing makes a huge difference. Anything to reduce the force necessary for insertion and removal subsequently reduces stress on the N900's connector and thus reduces possibility of detachment.
