I bought mine from Vodafone online, and collected it in-store, but figured I was better off sending it to Nokia directly (as their online checker insisted it was still under warranty) as Voda don't stock the N900 any more, plus it's awfully hard to track where your phone is (so I have heard) if you take it to Voda and they'd probably have just sent it to Nokia on my behalf anyway?

If Nokia are happy taking it directly then yes, that's your best bet (and yes, I'm sure Vodafone would just send it off to Nokia anyway). Legally the warranty responsibility lies with whoever you bought it from though.

What course of action is there for those of us in the USA who only have a 1 year warranty and that 1 year warranty is expired?

Well, got my N900 back today oddly, despite the comments saying "PHONE SWAPPED", the screen hasn't been replaced (which at least means I don't have to order another Boxwave protector) but the keyboard and sliding mechanism, plus the motherboard (and therefore IMEI) are new. I'm not quite sure why they only changed half of it, but there you go..

I'm looking to upgrade soon anyway, but obviously it'd be nice to be able to sell on a brand-new N900....! (Incidentally - I've always had Nokias... 5110, 3310, 8310, 7250, 7610, N70, N95, N96, N900... and I'll be ditching them for now as there's nothing on the way that interests me )
Don't know why no-one replied, but it is more likely that the problem is with the mains charger, my mains charger (well, one of them) developed a problem somewhere in the cable which makes it near-useless at least until I buy a spare cable I can use to fix it.

if any N900 users in India facing warranty related issues due to USB connector breaking off can quote this message and post a reply with their details. I will arrange for the best possible solutions directly from Nokia care.

Epoxy on each side of the connector should help.
