sorry to bother you guys again...but I'm still having trouble.
I'm following the instructions for Installing NITDroid N12 to EMMC (clean install) and I can't get pass this part:

dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-07_rc3_armel.deb

I've tried multiple instructions on several different websites, but every time I reach this step X-terminal encounters a problem and says

dpkg: error processing /home/user/MyDocs/nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-07_rc3_armel.deb (--install) :

cannot access archive: No such file or directory

But..I'm sure I saved it there..I don't know what's wrong...Can someone explain to me what this step is? What does it do? Maybe if I know what it does, I'll be able to figure out why it won't work...Thanks alot! I really appreciate it.

The Wiki Page actually has links to YouTube videos that you can simply follow. I made those videos by the way; I already tried installing NITDroid 0.0.9, Gingerbread, N11, and N12. They're all the same steps anyway, just different files being used for each version. I made those YouTube videos by simply following the Wiki Tutorial to the dot.

EDIT: You said you were sure you saved it to "MyDocs"...can you post a screenshot (with File Manager or FileBox showing where it's located)? Sorry, just wanted to make sure.

Thanks for getting back to me topet2k12001. I think the problem was because I extracted the nitdroid-kernel file on my computer before I copied to my phone...I tried doing it again this time, but left the file as a .deb. Do you know if it makes a difference? This time it actually got a little farther when I typed the command on X-terminal...it said:

(Reading database...23846 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-07 (from.../nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-07_rc3_armel.deb)...
Android not found. MUST be mounted on '/and'

before repeating the previous message i posted earlier...followed by subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

*I've never taken any screenshots before, but I'll figure it out...i don't know much about computers besides checking email, google stuff, and microsoft works. lol I'll post it up once I get it. thanks again!

*I've been following the videos you mentioned too when I tried to installed the gingerbread...haven't looked at it for the N11/12 tutorial too..I'm going to look at it now. thanks! It helped alot.

You can either install an application that allows you to take screenshots...open Application Manager and type "screenshot" and you will find what you are looking for. Your N900 needs to be connected to the Internet. Or, you can press the keyboard combination of Ctrl, Shift (the "up" arrow) and the letter "P" on your N900's physical keyboard. It's quite tricky due to the small size of the keys.

There you go. Yes it does.

Human translation...X Terminal is complaining because you asked it to "unpack" the contents of "nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-07_rc3_armel.deb" to a folder that was not mounted ("/and"). Which leads me to conclude that you missed a step in the tutorial (again, unfortunately).

My friend, just a piece of advice and hope you won't take offense...a lot of the people in this thread who had problems with installing/uninstalling are due to "extreme excitement", e.g. they got too excited that they missed the point of reading a Wiki Page carefully. Tip: read each step and do not proceed with even reading the next step unless you are sure that you have successfully completed the previous/current step you are in. You can check if you are following it correctly by also viewing the video tutorial. Pause the video if needed.

I am anticipating that, if you keep up with that pace of "extreme excitement", you will miss another step...Step 6 (a lot of people have misses on this one). Now don't scroll down the Wiki to view it! What did I just say, hm?

Thank you soo much!

First of all thank you replying , well you are right that very little spelling can go wrong but I have followed the exact same process(without a spelling mistake) as you mentioned above the only thing(as I said earlier) when I execute:

tar xvf /home/user/MyDocs/N11_Vostok.tar

I get the error message(or just a message might be):

tar: can't open the old file sdcard: Is a directory

and it stops right on this command

so I do no go on the next command of installing the kernel that is i have not tried:

dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/nitdroid-kernel-2.6.28-06_final1_armel.deb

as the tar command above does not unzips the entire Vostok
Hi da_nvncbl!

Try expand N11_Vostok.tar.bz2 to MyDocs directory.
View if N11_Vostok.tar -file really is expanded over there.
Is possible that tar does not find N11_Vostok.tar-file because
the file does not exist there.
Do all in x-terminal again beginning from root...

I had installed nitdroid long time back - around September 2010. Post that this latest build was the only one I installed.

Did a clean install and face the following issues:

- The UI is more buggy than the earlier build I used
- Nitdroid crashes every now and then
- The activity wizard becomes unresponsive regularly
- I can not connect to GPRS

Overall not a great experience for me. Perhaps the build is an unstable one. Not sure.

EDIT: The phone bricked as well. Had to reflash it :-(

omiigosh!! i was finally able to get nitdroid on my nokia n900! thanks everyone for trying to help me, especially you topet2k12001. You were right, I just had to read the instructions carefully and not get too excited...but i also had to hard reset my phone before I was able to successfully install nitdroid. I was glad I did because that led me to realize what I was doing wrong...It turns out my application catalogue for extras-testing were wrong..

One last question, is it ok for me to switch between maemo and android without damaging my nokia n900? Thanks again!
