I can't believe that I missed this video. Here's a good look at some Tegra Optimized games for the Motorola Xoom:

I'll be interested to see what the new Tabs can do.

Very interesting... Square Enix, the company behind the mega-hit franchise Final Fantasty, has spun off a development studio called Hippos Labs specifically to target the smartphone market.

I presume the same goes for tablets. I expect at a minimum that iOS and Android will be the target platforms, but I could be wrong.

Just. One. More. Post!

Here's the N64 Emulator running on the Xoom!

Looks great! The audio is quite bad, but the framerates are impressive.

Here's hoping that the emulator gets an upgrade quite soon.

Back in the dark days when I was running Windows, I used Anti-virus software due to the known vulnerabilities of the system, yet I never once got a virus. In the end, my personal usage policies were enough protection; eg. multiple firewalls, use only trusted software, use software I'm confident is secure (eg. chrome vs. IE), use few programs, one trusted user (me), etc. While Android is certain to have its vulnerabilities, I'm confident that this system will remain secure in my sober, calculated use.

I personally don't feel that anti-virus software would help me on Linux based Android, based on the way that I am likely to use the software, and what I [think I] know of the system. This is an ignorant viewpoint, I know, though as far as I'm aware, the majority of android attacks are trojan APKs with permission settings that don't seem to make sense (eg. wallpaper that requires access to your contacts).

But perhaps you could offer a compelling reason why anti-virus software should be strongly considered or even a scenario, and I'll reconsider.
For one, identifying said trojans would be a good reason alone--but you should also consider zero-day exploits. So long as you can root a device, you also have exploits (the two go hand-in-hand). rageagainstthecage is how Droid people root their handsets, but it's also precisely how that last HUGE bunch of trojans also managed to quietly root and take hold.

The only truly valid counter-argument I can see AGAINST using some kind of anti-virus (which is SUCH a misnomer in this case) is that they seem to be very behind-the-curve. Google seems to have been more on top of things than they were. (i.e. Google cleaned out the trojans off of phones long before these anti-virus companies even updated their signatures and software to detect them.)

I love this. As soon as they taste a bit of success, they're going to go stab their partners and crash into another self-destruction binge.
<drunk> I DON'T NEED you anymore.. I don't need ANYBODY!! LEAVE ME ALONE!! I CAN WRITE MY OWN damned OS *vomits sloppy code* </drunk>

This is quite impressive, and about 10% of Apple's sell through numbers, especially considering that it only has 13,000 apps!

Samsung is driving for the hoop.
The only thing that makes me nervous is EXCLUSIVITY. Take, for example, Angry Birds Rio which is only available on the Amazon app store. At this rate, I'm going to need to install half a dozen app stores to be able to find all the Android platform apps. :P

Ok, so I lied.. Here's another post!

It seems that Google is ready to roll out their in-app billing API for Android for testing:

http://android-developers.blogspot.c...ket-ready.html

The feature is set to launch in about a week!

This is much, much more desirable than requiring entering your credit-card info on a per app basis, and will make the app market more competitive with other markets springing up.

I also fully expect a Paypal API to come into being at some point.

Quick question: did rageagainstthecage also require you to accept permissions upon installation, or was it an exploit that moonlighted as a low-permission app only to gain root perms?

The one I have found a close fit for my immediate needs is the Motorola Cliq 2. The only dawback I have seen is the motoblur feature. So I guess my question is how difficult is rooting the phone to get rid of this feature if Im used to reflashing the N900. I would go with the Desire Z but its a little out of my price range for a 2nd phone

Neither. It's an ARM linux executable that runs and breaks through the sandboxes and elevates the shell into root. Nice, huh?

I could be wrong, but my guess is that you don't need to root or do anything except download a replacement desktop out of the store and set it up as your new default desktop. (i.e. LauncherPro)
