First of thanks for creating such a nice tool

I created a csv in PC suite (ovi suite 3.2 iirc) and then in libre office converted the seperator character to be a \t (tab) since that was the only character I coult think of that I was 100% sure did not appear in my SMS'es (unless VCARDS contain \t).

When I run the progam it does not print any error messages but it also does not add any of the conversations to my conversations.

Any suggestions would be welcome, I will tomorrow generate a new csv that also includes the messages sent/received on my n900 and then try to see if this works if I first delete/move the current db out of the way....

Two example lines (maybe the format changed a bit?):
A quick cursory read of the source indeed suggests to me that a different format is expected, since the code seems to expect the word "deliver" in the second field...
I guess I'll use sed tomorrow and try to replace all instances of "READ,RECEIVED" with "deliver" and "SENT,READ" with submit.

Are you based in the UK?

As if you're not going to do the backup method, I'd recommend you try my alpha-quality Qwerkisync tool.

It'll do a safe import, but currently has a few hard coded values that assume you're in the UK.

Right now maemo.org is coming up blank (is that SOPA/PIPA related? - it's not showing anything so it's kind of hard to know), what type of assumptions does it make?

Although I tried to read this thread well I have been mainly reading it in a way to make sure the versions of source/binary I had were the most recent since the instructions didn't look like they were changing, is the "Backup method" a method where I:

1. Sync my new messages with Ovi Suite
2. Create a csv of new and old
3. Backup my current phone contents
4. Remove current sms-db (el-v1.db)
5. Run smsimporter on the csv....

If not I would greatly appreciate it if you told me which post/page I find the instructions so that I don't have to go over all 26 pages again, thanks.

I'm so sorry mr_jrt! I didn't connect between this thread and the thread I started before tumbling accross this thread in my mind!

I don't think I want to do the backup/restore route since that sounds way more destructive then just somehow getting the messages into the sqlite db.
I'm going to look at that tool now that maemo.org is again displaying.

Basically, it'll convert any phone numbers it encounters that begin with '0' to '+44'. I just didn't get around to adding the configuration settings, so it's hard coded for the moment.

The backup method is to use PC Suite's backup tool, not Nokia/Ovi Suite's. It's not destructive in the slightest - and if you have any concerns simply copy the /home/user/.rtcom-eventlogger directory before doing anything and if things don't work out, copy it back.

Here's what I am currently doing:
1. Created a backup using Backup-menu

2. using Ovi suite I restored my old phones' content onto my phone (destroying the new phones' history).

3. Using backup-menu create another backup.

4. On my PC using sqliteman I am now just merging the two databases, to do that I:
a. exported the new messages (events table) to sql statements
b. using sed/text search and replace removed the "id" field from all queries
c. ran the resulting queries on the db containing the old messages so that the new messages would be appended to the old.

The last step I expect will be to overwrite the el-v1.db file with the newly generated one and reboot the phone, the queries are still running at the moment so I'll know in a bit.

And I have all my messages again!

I have to say that right now I am overcome with jubilation and want to declare my undieing love to the n900 from all the rooftops.
Too bad there won't be a worthy successor.

(I don't like the n9/n950 for their lack of a microsd slot and fm transceiver and the lack of a physical keyboard on the n9)

hmm some of the old conversations seem to now be ordered first showing everything the other party ever sent and then showing everything I ever sent...

Will have to look at that later.

What you've found is the reason I wrote a syncing tool - the UI displays events in the order they are inserted into the database. You'll need to reindex them so the IDs go up in date order. Then correct the group caches. Hence the tool

When I started smsimporter i get the message:

/usr/bin/run-standalone.sh: line 11: ./smsimporter: Permission denied

So, whats the mistake or need I the "script" run-standalone.sh? If so, where I get it?
