From the article:
Verizon and another major carrier seem to be tracking rooted phones by seeing who has not accepted updates. They also seem to be doing this as of right now, meaning you could be on their list if you have a rooted device. New builds for phones will include a tracking code which if removed, could potentially leave your phone lifeless without data or voice access. The overall goal here is for carriers to lock down devices tighter than ever, but then provide 1-2 dev devices each year for those of us that wish to actually enjoy our phones.
Dammit!
This is a big deal, and somewhat disgusting. Subsidies, carrier lock-in, and spectrum ownership have turned a would-be competitive space into an n-player oligopoly -- and this is the most recent, sad result.

Lets hope that at the federal level, bandwidth is regulated much like building zoning is today, rather than selling an entire spectrum to one-or-two companies that can afford it, place restrictions on *how* the bandwidth is used. If the system were WiFi-like -- free or licensed spectrum by area -- with a restriction on the number of towers you could install in a particular area, it would be very, very good for competition, radio innovation, and open systems.

I'm not sure of how they're doing it in the US, but in Canada major telcos auction for spectrum at rates that only major telcos can afford (billions). The smaller competitors are thus locked out, and forced to 'buy' time from said telcos. Thus you have 3 or so players in the arena, and a whole industry is dependent upon them -- they have incredible amounts of control.

Well just let me know, please, which is the best way today to get superuser and busybox on wife's galaxy tab without too much risk. I don't think I can resist this time.

Brother, I wish I could! Perhaps ask Dan, he should be able to help as he has rooted his Tab.

This seems pretty easy/safe as it looks as though it's run completely off of an SD card.

On a tab, this would be exceedingly cool. I still wish there were a native X client, though.

From the link:
An ubuntu 10.10 maverick (with LXDE window manager) machine in your pocket. Perfectly usable from the phone itself using a VNC client, this allows you to install any ubuntu software onto your phone and have it with you always. Coupled with the (potential) ability for your phone to be hooked up to a television with TV Out (works with the Nokia TV Out cable available on eBay), and for (supposedly any) HID-compliant bluetooth keyboard and mouse to be linked up to the phone (requires Android 2.2), this really does become a PC in your pocket.
How to boot:
- Place ubuntu.sh and ubuntu.img in the same directory in your SD storage.
- Enter a terminal and enter ‘su’ to become a superuser (root).
- Navigate to the directory where you placed the files (e.g. “cd /sdcard/external_sd/ubuntu”).
- Execute the script by typing “sh ubuntu.sh”.

Very interesting...

It seems that Google Apps (market/music/camera/gallery) are about to be updated!

Very interesting. In a more competitive environment, Google will have to step twice as fast to maintain their lead, and I'm looking forward to seeing their latest efforts.

btw, what is up with android market and paying for apps/games?

There is an EXCELLENT game over on iOS side that seems to be an iOS exclusive for the foreseeable future, due to something about getting android users to pay for apps:

Superbrother's: Sword & Sworcery EP

Beautiful pixel art graphic, hauntingly familiar chiptune music by Jim Guthrie, gripping story and a wicked sense of humor.

Not sure, though I expect that Amazon will challenge Google in this regard. They manged to scoop Gameloft shortly after launch, which may be indication that the Amazon Appstore is more game developer friendly than the Google Market.

PS. Nice game. It reminds me of 'Out of This World' or 'Flashback'

This is cool...

Fring is now, er, beta-ing group video chat:

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/04/fri...deo-call-beta/
VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIcJHqYpktA

It seems that the interface is really quite simple, and looks great.

I *wish* these services backboned on SIP. It would be far nicer than having 5 different clients to connect to everyone...

Here's a in-depth review of the Amazon Could Drive service:

VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36TzWE5MWFM
Bonus: It's running on a tab!!!

The service looks pretty good, and very user friendly.

You know what I *love* about Amazon MP3's? They are DRM free. That's right, you don't need Amazon to play your tracks, which is the reason I would buy Amazon over other services. This is a very compelling feature. Of course, their DRM apps are somewhat disconcerting.

Anybody know what i can do with an android 2.1 running on a rockchip, like install ubuntu or something, and not like easy debian but full.

I must admit im really not impressed with android, it's much better then mac but i really like linux and this android experience really made me appreciate my N900 more.

Or if not ubuntu on the rockchip tablet then it would be cool to put maemo or meego.....

No affiance intended.
