WFT,

Ok I think I can help a bit. I was somewhat intimidated by this install for a while as well. But just make sure you do a few things properly and you will do fine.

Do not install all of the files you listed. PB made two sets of files probably so that us n800 users could choose which memory card we used. You just have one memory card ( the mmc files refer to that) So, MMC1 on the n800 is one card and MMC2 is the other. You need to find out what your internal memory card is called of those two options and then install the corresponding files.

Then, the easiest way to confirm file size is to download the files to your computer and then transfer them to your n810. But I only did this with the Deb files because my xp computer was changing the name of the tar file. I downloaded the tar file directly to my nokia and it took quite a while but worked fine. My guess on the file size thing is that by now PB probably has that ironed out, but I won't try to speak for him. Once you have the files, you can then install them. Make sure you do it in the order he says.

One more thing, if you can afford it, I'd suggest you just go buy a much larger SD card and then you don't have to worry about the size of these files. Cards are so cheap these days, I think it's worth the peace of mind, don't you think? I put my KDE install on an 8 GB SDHC card and haven't had any problems with it.

Bottom line, just be carefull about the details here and this will work out fine.

Neil

PS I too am sorry to hear about your auto accident PB. I hope you are OK and hopefully you didn't like that car anyway

Neil: this is great I can tell I am near. Just to clarify you said:

"You need to find out what your internal memory card is called of those two options and then install the corresponding files."

What program do I use to determine what the internal card is called, the File Manager?

Will it definitely be called either MMC1 or MMC2? If not, I wouldn't know which set of files to install.

When I know what it is called, I install the set of files to the internal card, not a removable card as I posted above?

Lastly, what if the internal card doesn't have 2 GB free, I start looking for fluff to blow away?

Looking forward to another helpful response from you......

wft,,
try going back and reading the earlier parts of this thread for the answer about what your n810 internal card is called. I would just be going by memory right now and would probably just confuse you. I just went by what was stated inn the earlier posts and it worked out fine for me. Also try this: do a search using my user name using the advanced search mechanism on this site Find my post where I ask a list of questions of PB and he then answers them one by one.[what a guy!] That post really cleared up a lot of things for me.

Neil: thanks again. I found your earlier post and it really cleared things up. I am downloading these files and will give it a run tonight. Hopefully tomorrow I will not be the proud owner of N810 paperweight! Wish me luck and thanks again.

Your N810 internal card is MMC2.

DUBWISE: Any reason to put it on the internal vs. SDHC? Is it just a matter of personal choice or is one better than the other?

WFT,

I'm thinking that maybe you are not understanding the memory card thing here given your question above. I don't know how much you know, so I apologize if I say something here that is too obvious. So here goes:

The n800 has two memory card slots. I forget which card is which now, but they are mmc1 and mmc2. In the n810, as I understand it, there is only one memory card slot, the one inside. So, as Dubwise said, it is called MMC2. In most cases these days, we are putting cards in this slot that are called SDHC as opposed to the older SD cards. So as you can see, you will be installing this program on the INTERNAL SDHC card. But with your n810, you only have this choice since the program is going on the memory card and not the devise's flash memory. I'm pretty sure that Penguinbait set it up this way because the devise's memory wouldn't have been big enough to handle it. (but I could be wrong about that) Anyway, you then need to choose the files to download that are marked mmc2. Of course ( just going from memory here) I don't think the tar file has this designation.

At any rate,

Make sure you do the following and most likely you will end up with KDE:

1 probably not mandetory, would just make things easier, go get a bigger sdhc card
2.make sure that those files are the right size by whatever method you can.
3. if you download these files first to a Windows PC, don't let them end up on your Nokia having been renamed by Windows
4 install them in the sequence listed by PB. I recall this part actually being pretty easy. I just clicked on them and the Application manager opened and installed them for me. BTW- AP Manager gave me a bunch of inaccurate info along the way, so don't let that throw you.

now go find KDE in your extras folder and give it a go. Follow the above and I'll bet it works. If I can, you can. You saw how in the dark I was by reading my earlier post, right?

Neil

The n800 has 2 memory cards. The n810 has 1.

Bunch of misinformation there, kids.

The N800 has two slots that you can do what you want with.
The N810 has 2 gig of internal flash and one slot, which is called MMC1.
The internal flash looks like a slot to the computer and is called MMC2.
You can use either one for KDE. I put it on the internal, MMC2.
If you dual boot to the internal flash, MMC2, you can swap out MMC1
whenever you want and still run all your programs. 2 gigs is plenty of room for KDE.

Thanks to all who responded. I understood (with some earlier help) about the various drive options, my only question was whether the internal memory was preferred over a external card for KDE. At any rate, I installed it perfectly last night and will play with it today. My eyes aint what they used to be so I need to make everything a bit larger on the screen (tips?). One thing I learned -- and needs to be re-stated again -- is the TAR file MUST be downloaded by the 810 and not a computer. Even after I changed the name back after windows altered it, it still didn't work forcing me to reflash and download it again by the 810. If you simply download all the files with the 810 I think the install should go off without a hitch. Thanks again all.
