We are not declining an exchange at this point. Subject to an engineers report saying it is not physically damaged we will exchange the unit.

Its this bit that worries me.
Well of course an engineer is going to say it is physically damaged the USB port is loose.
The problem is the damage is caused by every day use and you have an engineer paid by Nokia to decide if that is my fault or a bad design desision by nokia.

If you can, try and take photos/video documenting the problem before sending your n900 off.

I would not like to be that engineer that makes decision about damage.
But that kind of skill would be awesome! You could just look damage and make little conversation with device: "Helloouu so what happened to you?" "This bastard shove it to my trunk like there is no tommorow and now i feel dirty and my *** hurts".
How much easier and cheaper (every dissapointed customers meants that you lose about average 5 more customers) to all parties it would be just replace/fix device ASAP. I bet that after changing to micro-usb the rate for these kind of damages has gone up.
