Let's not forget that an Army exists for defense as well and that they don't just fight--they also lend assistance during disasters. I, for one, am glad to see Android making its way into the US military.

I hear you, man. I learned my lesson, too. I wonder, sometimes, whether Nokia's executives and management are pleased to be the ones to have taught this lesson at the expense of their brand name and quality. I often think that they seem to be fine with it.

I thought I'd heard that 3.0 was intended for tablets only and that 3.1 would be designed to include phones as well. Maybe that was just part of our wishful timeline for development rather than an actual timeline or rumor. I forget.

The rumors suggest that you're supposition was correct. If 3.1 is to include phones, then it implies that 3.1 is a more polished release, as Android was supposed to be platform agnostic from the start (eg. dalvik, display density). It seemed as though 3.0 was rushed to market, and even Andy Rubin commented that they cut corners to make the release -- hence no releasing the source.

The speed at which android is iterating, I suspect we'll be hearing something at Google IO, which is around the corner, I might add. I expect that Google has been going full-steam on polishing 3.0 and that the 3.1 release will be quite significant.

I think the original iteration speed served the project better than the intentionally slowed iteration speed. It seems as if the Android project has problems setting an appropriate timeline for their goals -- Honeycomb should have been functional upon release. The shorter release schedule allowed them to release as quick as things were complete.

Ditto. In fact, for so many of these 'apps' that rely on cloud-services (I don't care who hates that word), I would rather see a competent web app. HTML5 can't get here soon enough.

That begs the question: how compliant is Android's stock browser when it comes to HTML5 tech and standards like webGL?

I didn't even realize that Samsung's Galaxy Tab micro-site has been updated:

What's very interesting is that they have a link to the 10.1v (the original Tab 10.1) and it lists the SoC as "1.0GHz tegra20 Dual Core Application Processor", but the new thinner 10.1 SoC as "1.0GHz dual core processor".

Is there a different brain in the beast?!

There are a couple interesting things about the upcoming 10.1" Dell Streak Pro:

Here they are:
  • The SoC is listed as the Tegra T25, which may imply a 1.2GHz clocked unit with a 400MHz GPU.
  • The modem is modular which could imply a mini pci express card.. LUST!
  • The 10.1" latitude has full pen support, though this is missing from the Streak Pro. A sign of things to come?

Lets hope that their prices stay low, and the screen quality improves.

I'm really contemplating whether or not to get a HTC flyer simply because it comes with an active digitizer. The HTC flyer is high on my list but are there any other tablets or convertible laptops with good pen/stylus input that people can recommend?

This seems to be the *only* modern (mobile SoC) tablet that has an active digitizer. All of the other ones rely on touch input or 'capacitive' stylii.

The only other tablets that have active digitizers run Win 7 by default and ship with notebook CPUs (ie. 4 hour battery life -- in a rather heavy package 3-4 lbs).

I really applaud HTC for moving on this, though I would like to see more manufacturers follow suit. The Tab 8.9 with pen would be so killer...

The rumor mill is a churnin' and it seems that the suggest Google is looking to spotify (partnership or purchase) for their music services:

Amazon has already laid down their hand for cloud streaming, and Apple is reportedly quickly approaching the mark. This leaves Google in last place in the release chain.

I think later this summer Asus is supposed to release a 7" tablet, the MeMo. It is supposed to ship with an included phone like bluetooth headset (cool) and.....

an included pen for drawing / note taking.

Sounds similar to the flyer, but perhaps better specs? As well as the Transformer is being received, this could be a tablet to keep an eye on. Supposedly about $499.

I had completely forgotten about that one.. Way to go Asus...

I'm hoping that these devices have very fine-resolution input for the pen. It would be nice to be able to write as one does on paper. This includes the right amount of friction between the pen nib and the display surface. A tough Matte screen would be ideal in this situation -- something not prone to scratches.
