I'd hold on to your loot for a bit. With Chinook ports should be easier (abiword) and cross program stuff should be too (integrated contacts).

With less $$'s required for development ...
+ increased user-base [N800+N810]
= I'm feelin' that commercial apps will soon be a profitable undertaking for some.

I'm hoping to see robust, commercial (pay for play) apps in 08.

I would pay $100 too for real msword editing and outlook pim synching. I assume that exchange push (like Windows Mobile) is impossible without licensing something from goodlink or microsoft. My order would be:

1. reliable msword and rtf view
2. msword edit
3. ota synching of exchange data (including email)
4. outlook pim synch w/o exchange

Put me down for $50 (and I've offered before). And I sincerely hope that abiword will be ported to OS 2007, since we're finally at the point where most of the stuff that I used on the 770 and OS 2005 and 2006 has been ported over. While I understand that thing should be easier to port over in Chinook, it will still take time, and my fear is that some developers will tire of the need for constant re-porting of apps. Having said that, thanks very much for your efforts, Ryan. I, (and lots of others) really appreciate your efforts.

Thanks, Keith.

I'm in for $100. Here's what I want:

1) I don't care very much about word/excel _file_formats_. Open Document is good enough for me. If it does that, and not MS file formats, I'll still pay.

2) Word Processor

3) Spread Sheet

4) Presentation Graphics

5) Paint

6) Draw

7) Calendar & Todo

8) (since Outlook is part of MS Office) Better IMAP client, pref. one which allows me to say "just show me my server folders that have unread messages" and "just show me my server folders that I've marked as favorites". Oh, and, it should let me have the Inbox, Sent, and Trash folders be my server side folders instead of local folders. Ultimately, this one is optional, though.

9) Sync calendar with Google Calendar and/or Thunderbird/Sunbird

10) Sync contacts with Thunderbird (and Gmail if they ever open that part of their API) (even you skip #8, I still think this one is necessary to the productivity that an office suite implies)

11) Sync bookmarks with Netvouz (add others if you want, but after considering Google and Delicious, I decided on Netvouz) (optional, but I'd really like it)

12) has to run on Chinook, so I'm ok on waiting for that (not that I expect anyone to deliver before the middle of next month).

I'll even go an extra $50 if the package can run on a plain Ubuntu desktop as well as Hildon.

And another $50 if the end solution runs on the Mac. (I haven't decided yet if I'm going to jump from the Mac to Ubuntu... )

And if it runs on Windows and/or can sync with CommuniGate Pro's calendar and contacts ... I wont pay more, but the university where I work might. :-}

I'm fine with a port of Koffice, as long as it doesn't require KDE (on the tablet, nor on the desktop (for the Ubuntu and Mac bonuses)). In fact, a port of Koffice, with a minimo version of Thunderbird, would probably be just about ideal.

Concerning office suites, I tried to compile Siag Office from http://siag.nu for my n800 under scratchbox. It's a nice suite and though it does not open word/excel formats, it opens rtf and exports in pdf, and that's good for me.
I had no problems in compiling it as well as its dependencies, using the mud builder, and the resulting deb-packaged binaries do run in scratchbox/xephyr, but give some errors concerning fonts on the real tablet, and I couldn't figure out how to fix that.

Maybe someone has time and know-how to go farther with this project? That could be a nice fix, waiting for an Openoffice.org port ;-)

Seems a nice find, although the apps look a bit heavy on the toolbar department: Screen real estate is on a premium on the ITs. Gvu (the Ghostscript viewer) would be a nice add-on for those who like to take on QuickScript.

I'll chip in 50Euros too. This thread should really have been a poll

I do think somebody should point out that there are two use cases for office software on the N tablets. The first is simply to view MS Office docs (xls, doc, ppt). This is by far the most common demand, which is why several mobile devices include nothing but viewers.

The second is document editing on the N tablets. I fall into this camp, and it's one reason I bought my 770 although, as I've pointed out in other threads here, word processing has been a sad experience. Right now it's all-but impossible, if only for reasons of my sanity

Incidentally, I notice that Texrat is conspicuously absent from this thread. I appreciate he doesn't speak for Nokia but it would be interesting to hear his views on this matter. I know Nokia have made a few efforts towards office software on the tablets but is it likely they'll ever make a huge push?

Too bad your against KDE, you could have all the things you request.

If Anyone wanted to run KDE with full Koffice.

This gives you Korganizer, Kmail, todo, alarms, spreadsheet, docs, presentations, diagrams, paint programs, Syncing with google calendar support is installed, full syncml, PRINTING (I make it really tempting dont I )

Too bad you dont want to come over to the darkside

If you change your mind, setup boot from sd/mmc 2008OS on 1.5GB partition, and PM me for KDE

koffice would bring, I believe, license issues (qt); more efficient on maemo would be gtk based solution.

abiword works well enough but will choke on some moderately complex ms word docs where open office will tend to do better--butqOO isn't a realistic option on the IT.
