Too bad these things can't be modular.
chat cam?
picture cam?
cellular radio?
wimax radio?
If they could be swapped through some card device, which had a level of industry backing that the product lines would be stable and available...
CF? waning in popularity
PCMCIA/PC-Card? probably too big, and about to start waning.
Express-Card? probably too big, and not yet dominant.
And, how do you do a chat cam and the GSM card at the same time, wthout having 2 of these slots taking up a ton of room.
But having such a slot would allow a device that can meet all of these needs (and counter-needs), without having N^2 devices to manufacture.

You can't honestly expect the large number of people who use the camera to make due with a accessory device for the benefit of the few people who work in places with strict security policies, can you?
I think a modular approach like TexRat's suggestion would make a lot of sense. It would make the tablet smaller by default, and people could add whatever functionality they wanted (GPS, camera, FM radio, etc.) It would be an easy, flexible way to diversify the tablet hardware. And it could open up an entire market of 3rd-party hardware add-ons.

I still think the *concept* is valid. I don't focus on walls, just ladders and pole vaults.

And looking around, I see a couple of CF gsm/gprs adapters still available (I remember there used to be more though). And I think Verizon, or Sprint, had (and still does have ?) a CF card for their service.

I have a nice CF card that is a combo WiFi -- 128 MB flash. It works rather well in the (Wince-based) SimPad, but functions problematically under Linux: Apparently it's not easy to get the OS to recognize both functions of the card at the same time.

I'm with Karel on this one. If you're going to put a camera in/on a device, make the frelling thing work. I get the funniest looks from people when they ask "whats the camera for" and I say "nothing". Sure you can use it with gizmo or pidgen, or whatever the hell it's called. I know nobody who's even heared of the program. I know a lot of people who do use skype, and heard that skype does video with linux. They all said pretty much the same thing, "hey, you can do video with your hand held now right". The camera is about as useful as a wing on a civic.

The camera is about as useful as a wing on a civic.
After all, some people even buy Windows Mobile devices. What's worse than that?
