I've never had it happen to me before. I usually wind up downloading alot of maps when in Satellite view (of areas I frequent or trails)

in attempts to figure out what's going on, I just found this post in another forum...

"I guess you are referring to Google Satellite. Unlike with their Street
map, they limit the downloads for Satellite -- most likely per IP and
day. So, if suddenly you don't get any new Satellite maps, you already
exceeded their limit, and will have to wait a day before downloading
more maps. FWIW, the popup tells you about the failed download. "

So, I guess I'm not the only one. Anybody out there found a way to get around this?

Laughing man... do you know how much you've downloaded?

In my experience Google will (temporarily) ban my IP address very very soon whenever I start looking around in an area. I don't have to do much map downloading at all, _certainly_ much less than when interacting via Google Maps (through browser), not to mention when using Google Earth (I've never experienced GE stopped downloading, and I must have downloaded umpteen gigabytes at the time, particularly when flying around with that built-in flight simulator.. )
But when I use MM it seems to be very sensitive to how much I download. I don't know why this is so.

So.. I'm definitely not the only one. I haven't had any success changing my IP addres, I'm with Shaw cable. And, i haven't had much luck using a proxy server (managed to get one working for about 30 seconds, and I tried several).

If anybody has any other ideas or solutions, I'd love to hear them! I haven't been able to download any maps for over a day now, so I guess google satellite still has my IP banned!

No idea. Though I usually browse to an area that I want satellite view from and then I zoom in on several levels. It's enough to make the screen show those big pixelated boxes as the upper right hand pop up box says "downloading maps". And it takes a while.

Hmm, I suppose I can measure it with Conky. I'll reboot sometime and go to an area I haven't downloaded maps with yet and see how much I can wrack up before this ban kicks in I guess.

Thanks for any help...

I've spent a great deal of time trying to sort this out, and have so far tried the following. For consistancy, I'm now only browsing to maps, not downloading any map areas, as I'm sure that will fail!:

1. Using a different internet connection. I can browse new maps for about a minute or two (not exact) until it fails.
2. Using a proxy server (was successful for about 30 seconds until I was shut down again.
3. Changed my mac address. I'm pretty sure I did this successfully, using ifconfig etc... Was able to change my mac address, but then had the same problems. However, as soon as I changed my mac address I was able to browse to a few more new spots before being shut down again!

If it makes any difference, the maps I'm trying to view are all in Brazil (going there on Vacation soon!).

sigh, running out of ideas. Are there any other maps out there equivalent to google satellite? the others I've looked at just aren't the same... when this does work, its way too cool

Edit: Internet keeps dieing for some reason.. Though downloading these maps shouldn't kill it..

In case anybody is actually following this thread, or having the same problems. I decided to use some of the tools posted here:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=14925

This whole thing has been a big learning curve for me.

Well, I noticed that winmapper wasn't downloding any tiles at hime (empty folders), and only downloaded 5mb at my work computer. Then, once again emtpy folders.

Well.. my continual research led me to browsing google satellite. I'm blocked there too, I assume by my use of winmapper!!!
Who knew, I must really be in google's bad books.

Btw, how much do you usually browse on Google Satellite. I've never had a problem with downloading it. (Then again I don't download huge areas or routes).

I almost never used google satellite. I think I was blocked b/c I was using winmapper (as mentioned in that other post). I just went to google satellite to view the areas, and had already blocked.... it works on all the other computers around me though.

I think they block any third party application that downloads their satellite tiles.

I really wasn't downloading that much in winmapper either... in total the area I'm trying to view is only a few km long!! In total, I was able to download 2.9mb before being blocked - that really isn't very much at all!!! I don't think its the amount one downloads, but rather the speed at which their trying to do it.

Thoughts???? anyone???
