Sadly because it's only a small percentage of users who have a clean file and folder structure.
I can image many people have one "My Music" folder where they throw in all the files they download, having such descriptive names as 4786879658.mp3 or 4678326548.wma. Without indexing the ID tags, it would be just a mess.
MediaBox once started with folder-only browsing without any indexing. Then users began to complain that they have hundreds of files in a folder and can't browse by artist, by genre, by album. The folder browsing was fine for me, because I have every album in a subfolder, which I just drop onto the SD card, but apparently not for all users.
I've noticed new people with no knowledge of computing tend to organize after the number of downloads increases. First separate folders for music, movies, pdfs ...... & then subfolders after another lenghty period, say: rock chillout or whatever customized categorizations. Anyway browsing media folders and refreshing the file index live without the usual unstable database is a no brainer in use as well as coding. Being forced to use a db is an unecessary ball & chain in every way as smaller apps let you browse without the shaky long ritual (mirage quiver kilikali ....).

With ever decreasing prices for large capacity SD cards (8 to 16GB specifically) and specially wanting to swap SD cards, these big db based media apps are dinosaurs. And we are not even talking of mutli terrabite super-fast SD cards (prototypes working now) to be released over the next few years.

is it me or have the usability of kilikali gone out the window? it seems to toss just about everything into the playlist, no matter what kind of file it is...

I number my mp3 songs starting with 01xxx, 02xxx,.....,99 and if more than one CD per album 101,102,...... for disk1 & 201,202,...... for disk2 and dump them all in one folder. If the album is one large file, I split the single mp3 file with cue-splitter. Then delete all files except mp3s & photos. I make sure the photo files start with a letter so they are listed at the bottom of folders & killikali (or Media Box) and clicking on the right hand x deletes them from the list if needed. Folder's Naming convention: artist's name-album name.

I like keep thing a bit misterious: a tablets player should be fun and discovering some hidden functions make feel people better about themself
I have in mind a playlist editor: I was thinking return for 'navigation' and quick play button and space to add to the playlist, I just have to prepare a 3rd screen to manage the list (to achive the joy of the all killer no filler playlist)

pygame (SDL) + python is damn simple. I never used python or pygame before december 2008 and Im not a developer but with PytPyg everything is pretty there and even OS integration is straighforward (but Im not a great fan of that). Sure you can jump on the wagon but I warn you Im a mess and happen I throw away huge parts just because...Im not really focused on productivity: just the fun of doing
