:'( I tried and failed....

I get this message: mv: cannot rename 'metalayer-crawler': permission denied

Any ideas why?? (other than my N810 obviously hates me...)

Another problem with your tablet might be your wifi router. When my router was set in N mode, for some reason that I bet could be googled around, my battery was drained in an afternoon. When it was set again at - say - B+G mode, battery consumption became normal again.

permission would denied would probably mean that you didn't log in as root, which is what the sudo gainroot command does. You need 'becomeroot' from the application manager

At the moment, I stay in flightmode, so I've not got WIFI on. I only use the WiFi when I'm plugged in or the battery dies in half the time (and that's no time at all ) Could it still be effect even with this turned off?

Woosh!! Over my head! Sorry!! I typed exactly what you quoted. Do I need to change it or something?

you need to install a program called 'becomeroot' from your application manager. This will let you use the 'sudo gainroot' command

I tried to install "becomeroot" but it's not listed in my application manager. I've looked everywhere but can't find it. Do I not have the correct catalogues on here??? If not, how do I add it?

Err, forget about "becomeroot". It's an older application. Look for "rootsh" in Application Manager instead. It's a newer application that replaces "becomeroot" and is easier to install.

Once you install "rootsh", try overfloat's instructions again.

Thanks! I've installed Rootsh, and I followed the instructions. I hope it worked okay!

Here's what it said:

~ $ sudo gainroot
Root shell enabled

/home/user # cd /usr/bin
/usr/bin # mv metalayer-crawler metalayer-crawler.off
/usr/bin #

Is this what it's meant to have said?

Two things to lower and figure out where the power drain is:

1st is to lower your Wifi power transmission by doing the following:
  1. Click on the "Connectivity Settings" top menu icon
  2. Select "Connections"
  3. "Edit" any of the connections you already have configured
  4. Click "Next" until you get to the "Advanced" button
  5. Click the "Advanced" button
  6. Select the "Other" tab
  7. Change the WLAN tranmission power to 10mW instead of 100mW

You will now be using 10 milli-watts of power rather than 100 or in another way 1/10th the power drainage during wifi. I've read that wifi is one of the biggest power drains on any portable device.

2nd Item is just common sense based:
  1. Turn off all desktop applets
  2. Turn off all status bar apps

Use your tablet for a day or two like this and see if your battery is back to normal. Personally, mine went back to normal after I turned off several of the items that I had installed for these two areas.

I hope that helps.

yup, let us know if it helps with your battery problem - if not, you may as well switch it back on just so you know everything is normal and you can rule it out as a potential cause of any future problems.
dont forget to restart your tablet before you test the battery life otherwise meta crawler wont be switched off.

p.s. welcome to linux, you're one of us now.
