I made my own using one of the included presets as a starting point. Besides specifiying the output resolution, you will also need to enable the auto-cropping and the anamorphic mode to get rid of the black bars.

Thanks for the help guys.
Sadly, handbrake took over 3 hours to rip a dvd to something that n900 can't play (I'll fiddle about tomorrow and see if I can change that, but so far it didn't work).
AVS isn't free: the d/l installed will dump a watermark slap in the middle of the output screen unless I cough up $39.
I'll keep trying.

I am quite certain HandBrake *will* work. You just need to get the right settings.
I would try something much smaller for testing until you find the settings that work.. and then rip the 3 hour movie.

Kathy, the default video codec setting on Handbrake is H.264 which will NOT work on N900. You need to change this to MPEG on the main screen. All my videos I've converted have worked using the 'universal' or 'high profile' setting, I just can't get rid of the black bars at either side.

From what I understand, if you use ONLY the base profile it should work..but at that point you're usually better off with plain mpeg4 anyway. I've gotten my h.264 files to play with mplayer, but of course that isn't hardware accelerated so the performance is pretty bad.

Ick. I knew I was going to have to use mplayer when I got the N900... I just hope it's watchable when I do. I happen to really like H.264.

for h264 settings, use baseline L2.1 or L3 settings but do not use b-frames or the built in mediaplayer will choke. also, google for xvid4psp and use the ipod touch profile, it should work.
