The "ae" wtitten ∞ "infinity like" is smooth enough in my opinion. If there's to be a mascot PLEASE don't let it be some annoying animal (penguin, pigeon, etc)
But btw, for all you non-latin language speakers out there:
"ae" is pronounced "e", the latin way like in the following words:
"buena", "metro", "metronome", message" - the reason I say this is because most Nokian (made by nokia with people from Nokia) did not spell this right.
Hi all.
This might come a bit too late, but i can tell you how to pronunce "maemo". I came up with the name, so...
The origin is as stated: pwgen (a password generator utility which you can set to give you all character passwords) gave me an option, "maimo". I used 5 characters names for my machines, so i also restricted it to that. But I did not like the "i" so I changed it for an "e".
Maemo was the name of my desktop, and little by little it gathered importance in the project, as i made it the canonical repository for everybody involved. And became THE server. And the project. And the SDK. And the OS.
So now that the origin is clear, and me being Spanish and Finnish being pronounced almost exactly as Spanish...
"mah-Eh-mo"
mah as the beginning of my
eh as the "e" in "pet"
mo as in Monica, but only pronouncing the M and the O.
Hope you like it.

FYI: when this poll period is up, I'll create another one to weed out candidates. There are potentially so many that I believe there needs to be some clear criteria. For one, I think it's safe to rule out the joke submissions. I'm also inclined to only include submissions that have an actual design, rather than just text or reference photo. Thoughts?

Are you really using a poll on talk.maemo.org to decide on an official mascot for the whole of maemo.org? (Which'd then presumably be wanted in the heading of all the websites?)
Perhaps the poll needs some wider publication; or an explanation as to what the intent of the mascot is?
