I AM an early adapter, but where was this formally stated by Nokia? Maybe the advertisement stating this should be put in the Wiki -- the issue comes up quite often.

I didn't say it was. This point has been raised several times on this forum and the links posted before.
The step 4 of 5 stuff was supposedly said at Maemo meetings. I don't think the typical purchaser of the N900 went to those meetings, or should have.
I just get tired of hearing this stuff about being billed for early adapters and developers only, because I think it's a crock, and always have.

There is however lots of information and most of the reviews also used this as a descrption so it isn't exactly new (Google Entries). I think the annoyance here should be irected at least in part to the retailers as well.

As for difference of opinion, I believe that I am still entitled to hold a differing opinion and if you find this such an issue you are going to find the world in general a real pain. If you are comfortable with what it is. That is fine. Others are not.
My problem is not in your opinion. You and I and everyone is entitled to their opinions. My problem Is that why when someone "whines" as you or others might call it. He or She is given a hard time? blamed for lack of research? ignorance? told that is "device" is the wrong device for them? told to if they want something to just "make" it?
Why not just tell them. This options is not currently available. no plans for it now. Simple. Non-Offensive. Objective.

I didn't mention 'lack of research', call you ignorant or state that the device was wrong for you.
I stated that you were free to add the functionality yoursef if you wanted it. This is an option available to the Maemo community as a whole and something that I believe is fairly unique amongst large hardware manufacturers in this product placement.
Asking for functionality is one thing, stmaping your foot and shouting loudly that you have been dealt an injustice is another matter. Many people have bought devices in the past that have not lived up to their expectations, myself included. The choices available then are either to return the device as not suitable or live with the device on the basis that it does most of what you would like.
If you are unable to add the functionality yourself and you would like someone to add this for you then there are ways of doing this but emotive posts are unlikely to gain favourable responses from the developers in the community. Try posting a request for an application instead, think about your requirements and post them logically and clearly. You can add a brainstorm and encourage others to vote for it. A popular solution that is well thought out is likely to gain suport from developers. If not the maybe it's not important enough for the userbase as a whole.
