I have returned one n900 due to the same problem. I just reflashed my brand new, second n900 and the only widgets that I have added are facebook and foreca weather. My home screens are completely unresponsive now. Rebooting doesn't help. This is really frustrating. Any help on this is appreciated. The only other application I have consistently configured and used is Exchange. I have a very large mail file so I have only enabled synching three days back, and even then synching takes a really long time. That may or may not be a contributing factor. I tried felbutss terminal commands but that doesn't seem to do anything. I am a total noob so any help here is appreciated since this is a deal killer for using the phone.

a temp fix is not to restart. it restarts back into the same state for some reason.

a temp fix is to Install the gain root app so you can use the sudo gainroot command.

Open terminal and type:

sudo gainroot
killall hildon-desktop

this will restart that service

maybe try it with no widgets. do what i did. Load the widgets one by one. is the firmware upgraded on your new n900????

Don’t look it as a deal break. I see it as fun and learning with the BEST OPEN SOURCE PHONE. This is the best phone ever!!!!!!. No more developer certs needed no jailbreaking, just do what ever you want. Find a way to boot macOS X why not?? Windows 98 hell ye….and so on……. Break it fix it LOVE IT!!!! . This is an Open source phone. Things will break and not break. To prevent things like this happening an iphone is the perfect phone. Cant screw it

trust me this is the phone which i have been waiting for, for years.
i dont even care about not having an Xenon flash anymore like my N82. This is the peoples phone lol. you can learn so much from it.

Yesterday I disabled a few widgets:

personal ip
ap news
conversation inbox
fm transmitter on/off

and restarted the phone and have to say that it feels much snappier and has stayed that way. I opened a lot of browser windows last night & also listened to music & checked emails. I left most of the windows open overnight and kept on using it this morning and though it slows down a bit when doing too many things, music playback has been much smoother than before and swapping between windows is still quite fast.

If things keep up like this I'll certainly be much happier but I'm gonna give it a few days since reproducability is one of the main problems with these slowdowns.

Thanks for the advice!

All - Interesting update for the forum. I have been running the latest US firmware from day one. Before attempting to flash the phone again, I loaded the Vanilla image as described here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=32993&page=4

Note that I did not flash the device; I only ran the vanilla image. I then loaded on a number of widgets and have had no problems since:
SMS notification
OM Weather
Location window
AP News
RSS
Google search button
Media player
FM transmitter
Tune Wiki
Facebook

The only difference between what I have done before and now is that I have not configured any mail accounts, particularly mail for exchange. I will report back to see if adding exchange impacts the phone. As reported earlier, I have a really large exchange mail file. I am going to try installing mfefolders to limit the synching to just my inbox which hopefully will help make synching more manageable.

Fingers crossed as the n900 is a pleasure to use when it is functions as it should.
