Well, I found a suitable screwdriver and checked the first ribbon -- unplugged it and plugged it in again. I didn't feel comfortable undoing the next set of screws to check the smaller ones (besides, I can't imagine them coming loose, they're so cramped in) so I put the phone back together after that. No change.
So then I reflashed the rootfs and EMMC. Still no change.
I've booked it to be picked up and repaired. Hopefully they won't notice or mind that it's been opened... :\ Screws got scuffed up a little when I tried various screwdrivers.

I'm a little confused. The only mentions of "vanilla" on the repository page are eMMC content.
I tried flashing the latest UK firmware but it doesn't seem to be working... I run
sudo ./flasher-3.5 -F ~/RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1.203.1_PR_COMBINED_203_ARM.bin -R
...

What's going on?
p/s: I think you are missing the -f when you enter the flashing command into the forum, just want to make sure you didn't miss it when you enter at the command line.

I didn't really like the experience of sending my phone in to Nokia. After choosing the UPS pickup I got an email saying to expect another email with details of when it'd be picked up. 24 hours later I hadn't received that so I requested UPS pickup again, getting the same email saying to expect another. Three days later I gave up and chose the "freepost" option, so I could post it myself. I did so. The next day UPS turned up.
A week passed and I had no word. I hadn't been given a case ID so I couldn't track the repair. I emailed Nokia a few times with details, asking for a case ID or word on where my phone was but got no useful response.
Then a few days after that my phone turned up in the mail, fixed.
Thanks for the tips, folks. The "plug in the TV-out cable" was the one which saved my data.

Be very careful with the screws as they are very tight and easily damaged what video carefully.
