IMHO, you're going around this the wrong way.

You are asking for closed applications for a closed protocol on an open platform. Rather, recommend applications for an open protocol for your poor friends on closed platforms.

There are jabber clients for virtually every mobile platform, and every computing platform.

IMHO the idea is not to try to convince everyone to switch to jabber based apps, i have over 700 contacts on my phone and approx. 90% of them use either Blackberry, iphone motorola or Nokia symbian, can you imagine me trying to convince them all to switch from whatsapp, cnectd or bbm just to accommodate me and my maemo device? If i were them i would be trying me to get with the program.

you are not necesarry to convince your friends to add you on whatsapp because whatsapp automatically add your friends, from there phone numbers it detects if they have whatsapp, and today everyone has blackberry device have the whatsapp application coz they know that they can chat with iphone, android, blackberry, symbian friends

You seem to think everyone is concerned about what is closed or open and will stay away from closed source apps. I would consider myself the most techie person amongst all my friends and family and yet I did not even know whatsapp was closed source (nor do I even care). What matters to people is whether something works well and for chats a big part of it is what their friends are using. If ten of my friends are happily using whatsapp because all of their friends are using whatsapp you think I will be able to convince them to leave whatsapp cause it is closed source? I am having a hard enough time convincing just my wife to get whatsapp on her blackberry. She just is not interested because all her friends are on blackberry chat. Asking her to switch to msn (and all the spam) or anything else will be a lost cause before it even started.

hi people i sent an email to support@whatsapp.com, i told them to open source to our maemo 5, they answered that they are not thinking to open the source to our n900, they only opened for iphone, blackberry, android, symbian.

i try my best and hope somebody can port this application without having the open source from them

I also tried this three times, there not very helpfull. And i can understand it, Maemo is that small, why put a lot of work in something with little efforts.
