I must say that completely agree with Sungrove! With a bit of effort KDE can be made ready for everyday use (especially on the N810). I personally haven't used Maemo at all in over a month. I use KDE exclusively as my desktop environment. I did have to grab a few scripts and set up some keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys but it's all been well worth the effort..
...
Any "workarounds" (eg: using a script mapped to a button for right click or moving windows) that I may have to employ are NOTHING compared to what I gain by using KDE.
As Sungrove pointed out there are quite a few posts on suggestions for optimizing KDE.

This sounds like a great opportunity to make a how-to (in the wiki perhaps?) and collect all of the scripts, shortcuts, hotkeys, and workarounds in one place. I think there are a bunch of people out there who would be very grateful to have a single "KDE post-install how-to" on setting up KDE to work well on the N800 and the N810.
penguinbait, this is something I'd like to see in the FAQ:
I confess that I haven't done all my searching homework; that said, it isn't clear from this thread's big initial post whether the deb install is run as an application from the Hildon desktop. Once the debs are installed, do you just choose the "KDE" menu choice and your hildon desktop is replaced by KDE? And then when you're done, you go to the KDE menu and choose "log out" / "shut down" or something, and your Hildon desktop comes back? Or do you have to reboot and choose KDE from a boot menu? Thanks!

Problems with KDE installation.
This is my first posting, so please be kind.
After downloading kde .deb files and the .tar.bz2 file I quickly (too quickly) started to installing from mmc1. Everything went smoothly, then I started KDE from the EXTRAS and didnot get past the opening blue screen. Then I spent hours searching the forum for answers, and yes, my KDE358.tar.bz2 file was too small. 250MB instead of 294MB.
Since then I managed to download the complete version and I tried install again. Did get a message, do you want to update, when I was trying to install and it quit. Then I tried uninstalling, to start all over again. Only one left is KDE-mmc1, cannot uninstall. When I try to get my mmc1 card out to load all the files again or when I connect to PC with cable, get message: unable to connect, memory card in use. Also: memory card in use, removing card may damage data etc. No program seems to be running on the n800.
Guess I will really need some help from a kind forum member. Good thing, all other applications on n800 are so far working.
Please help, Stan

Hi Penguinbait,
just a quick one. My card allowed me to format it in n800 after 3 hours, so I started again. Transferred all four files to the blank card. Before inst. I checked installed aplications, and only found KDE-mmc1, which I cannot uninstall or delete.
Installed local-mmc1.deb. Next kde-3.5.8. tried to install, but was asked to update, which soon failed. Now there is a very long log file in application man. Don't know if anybody wants to look at it. Many new files were created on the mmc1 card. Since I cannot delete, could I format again??
Thanks, Stan
