In my opinion the app should integrate into the messaging system so that an additional icon on the home screen shouldn't be necessary.
And besides, the icon doesn't really look good to me. The shine and glow effect is something you'd expect from an iPhone app icon but the icons on N9 are much more simplified. No annoying effects, a background with a light gradient and simple (often solid-colored) glyph.
