Looks like you are correct... I can confirm your workaround.

Qwerty, is this what you got when you ran apt-get install osso-software-version-rx34-unlocked? (In my case rx44)

Code:
330 upgraded, 104 newly installed, 891 to remove and 2 not upgraded.
Need to get 78.7MB of archives.
After unpacking 13.9MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?
That doesn't seem right to me. It's in R&D mode with no lifeguard, and my /etc/apt/sources.list.d/hildon-application-manager.list looks like:

Code:
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/ diablo user
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/non-certified/ diablo user
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/updates/diablo/ ./
deb http://repository.maemo.org/extras/ diablo free non-free
Need I change something?

{EDIT} It is also a clean flash, except I installed OpenSSH, just to get that output to paste here. Not trying to use it for running update.

I did get that 13MB will be freed. 891 packages sounds right imho:
BTW, the whole mess of language packages (895) is replaced with one package for each language. That's not bad i think

Underscore, as I see you here, you want me to try out NuvoClear theme on Diablo?

I'm well aware of the point, but the facts are that upgrading a non-fresh system is very likely to result in a non-bootable or non-usable system, meaning you'll have lost all of your settings and applications anyway. So, better to plan for that and move your system over to an SD card (or leave it there if it already is) and upgrade a fresh install where your chances of success are much higher.

Hardly, that's likely months away. Waiting until then to play around is pointless.

Well, I'd like to see if Nuvoclear works, though I doubt they changed anything related to that.

Confirmed working on N810!

(I really like the "Update All" option. Was that there before?)
