My thoughts are, if I buy a Tab this Holiday season, how badly will it be out of date next year by other Android competitors in terms of RAM and CPU speed? I understand that technology always advances and if you wait for the next big thing your always going be waiting. But there's gotta be some buffer between that and feeling like you really should have waited.

Edit: And looking at Android.. is Qik (maybe Fring) really all the video chat functions in Android? No video thru Google Talk? I know none in Skype.
Indeed. The competition is looming and there *will* be better available shortly after the Tab is released. By better, I mean devices who offer certain elevated specs and may better appeal to certain buyers. For example, those looking for a WiFi only tablet may want to consider a Tegra 2 device that will *spank* the Tab in terms of general performance. Some tablets even have higher MP cameras, or Pixel Qi screens, etc.

If specs is what you crave, the I would wait, but the infancy of this market is such that devices will be evolving at a breakneck pace, so you may be waiting for the next-best thing for a while. It all depends upon what you want and where you're willing to settle -- but you know this .

Even iDevices are iterated on a yearly basis, so this years model has a time limit until it becomes last-years model.

Personally, I quite like the Tabs capabilities, performance, and general balance, and as such it appeals to me. While other devices would most certainly offer faster speeds, or larger storage, I don't know if these changes would be worth waiting for especially considering that there is a high probability that there would be a compromise made in some other areas (eg. battery life, DLNA software, weight, etc) -- no two models of devices are the exactly the same.

As for video chat: I'm not sure, but I think that the apps for this feature are in short supply. I know that Qik and Fring do it, as does sipddroid, but the latter is hardly a consumer grade solution. I suspect that google will upgrade Talk to have this feature for Android and integrate it into their suite of applications. Of course this is just intuitive speculation.

I hear ya regarding price. It will be interesting to see all of the different options on the market and their use-cases.
Looks like you may need to get the google box thing to use this. Will stick with my logitech remote for now but will watch how this develops.

That doesn't even mention that there'll be FAR, FAR better customer support from Samsung. They have a clear history of excellent customer supportand presence all over the world.

I've already set up my server at home with uShare so we can use UPnP multimedia sharing to watch stuff on all the XBOX 360's (built-in video player) and Nintendo Wii's (I use WiiMC) in every room in the house. Can't wait to use a 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab to do the same.

Yeah, the Tab's value goes far beyond it's specs. Also, a device like this is bound to be popular, and as such receive TONS of community support, thanks in no small part to Samsung opening its codebase.

Wow! This is awesome! Thanks for the link to the ushare app as I was looking for a good media server! Care to comment on your experience? What do you like about it, or how would you change it?

Also do you know a good media renderer for linux? I hear that MythTV does DLNA, but I have little experience in this realm.

I was expecting far better concerning DLNA and Linux, but while there are 'solutions' this space is in disarray!

I've tripped upon one Linux DLNA solution, which is a software toolkit called Coherence, that apparently has a standalone DLNA renderer application:
http://coherence.beebits.net/wiki/WikiStart#Whatisit

I will investigate further, as it may be a means for me to set up a DLNA renderer on my existing system, capable of being controlled by my Tab.

But if anyone has a better solution, by all means, I'm all ears... I would rather not have to buy new hardware to accomplish a purely software task, though I want a solution that is both predictable and robust. Eg. I would pay $99 for a much smoother experience if it came down to it.

I have a samsung LED TV 6 series which i have just read doesn't support DLNA but the 7 series does!
Does this mean I've had it?

Don't really want to splash out huge sums of money as I only brought it in february!

It WORKS great--I have no real complaints except that my one nagging annoyance is that it doesn't support automatically updating inode changes. This forces me to issue an "/etc/init.d/ushare reload" command on the server before I start browsing for media on my clients. That aside, it works flawless and reliably and it was incredibly simple to configure. If there was ONE change I'd make to it to make it perfect, it would be that--inode changes in the tree it's monitoring should kick off an update (MediaTomb does this, for example, but I don't think MediaTomb supports the XBOX 360's flavor of UPnP in addition to standard support).

No idea--I would have assumed that VLC supported rendering UPnP multimedia, though.

Doh! Sorry to hear that bud! I know HTC is releasing a small device specifically for this. I would guess that it wouldn't cost too much, but I could be dead wrong about this:

It looks small enough to be mounted behind a TV easily (depending on the setup of course).
