What's that.. any publicity is good publicity? or something..
I'd also take this to the Consumerist for those who have had the warranty claim being rejected since Nokia is trying to argue this isn't covered under warranty. Heck, maybe they'll even dig up the CEO's phone number.

OK, I'm feeling a bit paranoid now!

So far, my n900 usb connector is solid (even after dropping it twice!).

Judging by Nokia's response to this - if the connector is broken then getting something done is going to be a PITA!

My question is: How easy is it to fix the problem - e.g. can I just solder the connector back on?

I know this will invalidate my warranty but I am skilled in the use of a soldering iron and do not have the time to chase Nokia if a problem arises.

I hope someone (Texrat maybe) with more experience then me can come in and confirm.

But as I see it using surface mount rather then through the board soldering the only thing holding the socket onto the board is the little copper pads on the circuit board.

It has been 15 years since I did any soldering but these little pads would come off very easy if you were not carful desoldering stuff.

Unless the newer surface mount tech is useing a better way of attaching the copper to the board then back in the day.

I think it is more likly that the copper pads will be removed from the board then the solder joint will give up.

Of course this is untrue if the board is badly soldered in the first place. This may be why only some of us are seeing issues.

Looks like Nokia has at least acknowledged the problem on the Nokia Support Discussions (Maemo devices -forum):

Nokia responds to reports about the N900 micro-usb port getting detached

11-Feb-2010 11:25 AM - last edited on 11-Feb-2010 11:26 AM

Hi all,

we have just received the following statement from Nokia regarding the micro-USB port of the Nokia N900:

---------------------------

We are aware of reports that under certain conditions, the micro-USB port of a very limited amount of Nokia N900 devices can be detached. Product quality is of utmost importance to Nokia and we are investigating this issue further. Consumers who experience this issue should contact their local Nokia customer care. The same warranty applies to the Nokia N900 as with any other Nokia device. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The micro-USB port on my N900 is still working, but I am trying to be careful when attaching/removing the connector. Nokia should have made it sturdier and marked it better, now it is hard to see which way the cable connector should be attached.

Ok Well done Nokia. This is exactly as we expect to be treated.

And sorry for all the recent bad words around your name. I am sure you understand.

Now what do we do. I purchased my phones from mibilephonesdirect in the UK

I am assuming I now need to take the phone to a (Nokia Care Center) is that any Nokia store. only certain repair shops or what.

Or should I still be goin#g via my retailer. (I was about to drive past there head office near Newbury tommorow anyway.)

They mentioned that they had a Nokia repair center next door so my preference would be to deliver it to that center and talk to someone.

EDIT: When I go to www.nokia.com/repair and search for a store in the UK It just displays loading store types next to the field and dosent seem to move on.

Fantastic news Can people please make sure that this information is put onto whatever sites they posted the initial complaint to (engadget, etc)? We don't want people to be put off buying the N900 for no good reason.

Wohooo, easy there Let's wait whether something good will come of this or not. Nokia might still shut the door in our faces!

On a related note - my usb port appears to be okay (little wiggly but not worrisome) for now but there are times when it does not recognize the charger and I have to replug it in. Is this is a precursor of what's to come or a normal OS failing to recognize?
