Commsman: - re destination finding
Assuming you are using the OSM maps, and looks like you are, this is an issue with the way places happen to be tagged.
I know it's a rubbish answer to say 'go fix the map data' but unfortunately a lot of the map data was inserted without much thought to routing/searching.

I believe the way it works is effectively it builds a tree for search, Europe->uk->towns then any street within some arbitary threshold of a town is deemed to belong to that town. Personally I think the whole thing needs a much better, specific design. But it is what it is. In order for a town to show up in search it requries some tags that identify it as is_in Europe, is_in uk is_in county...etc

To fix, get an account signed up with OSM, and go use the web editor to look at a node that you can find in search. and copy the tags. Or just look at Eastleigh (the town I mapped) it does now show up in searches, because I tagged it.

OSM map data is fantastic, and part of that is people helping by adding useful information to give it that amazing level of detail.

Thanks for this - I suspected the answer was in the OSM maps. OSM is I agree amazing and I know I can get stuck in and contribute so will make a start as soon as I can - I can see some late nights ahead ;-)

Just a few of quick observations/questions in configuring Navit on the N800...

autozoom_active="1" seems to work, although autozoom_secs="n" does not seem to do anything. I was expecting to be able to temporarily zoom out and have the display zoom back to the autozoom level in force after n seconds, but instead the display zooms back instantly.

Secondly, I cannot see a way to turn spoken instructions on or off via screen buttons. I have tried
<osd type="button" x="632" y="516" command="speech.active" src="mybigmouth.png" />
and even
<osd type="button" x="632" y="516" command="toogle_announcer" src="mybigmouth.png" />

Thirdly, the route selection on the N800 with an OSM map seems quirky or even amusing at times. I am guessing this is all down to the quality of the OSM map and cannot be tweaked inside Navit? Examples include instructions to turn right when the displayed map shows the correct route is to go straight on following a main road over a set of traffic lights, and the selection of silly small roads rather than prioritising major roads and motorways.

Finally, are other graphics drivers available on the N800? sdl / qt_painter? I am guessing not.

I haven't been able to get the toggle announcer working right either. I haven't tried the auto zoom feature yet.

Inside the navit.xml file there is a section that has priorities for the different street levels. Currently, there are several sections based on vehicle type. Under the car section, you could try changing the priority levels: ie street_level_2 =30. The higher the number, the higher the routing priority. If you feel too many side streets are being used, you could try lowering the numbers for the lower level streets.

In regards to auto-zoom there is currently no way to have it pause for a period of time. Basically what you see is what you get.

I think it would be nice to have Navit "learn" what zoom level to use at different speeds based off of what zoom level a user tends to zoom manually. When I used auto-zoom I definitely did like what it did but I did wish it would zoom out a little farther for highway speeds.

I chatted with the guy that developed that auto-zoom feature on IRC a couple of days ago. He is no longer actively involved in Navit aside from monitoring the channel I believe. It didn't sound like he was interested in adding any new features either so if it's going to happen it will probably be someone else picking up the torch and carrying it.

If you are using the internal gui (recommended over gtk) then the following page would be a good reference for you:

http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Internal_GUI

Also refer to this page for enabling the internal gui if you haven't done so already:
