I was having problem with the maemo30 kernel as well. Widgets were dying from the desktop. (at default clock speed).

I can confirm widget disappearing and Contacts crashing with 28 and 30. Had to go back to 27.

Let me know if I can help debug somehow.

Without having to read 3752 posts, can someone summarize if this is safe to do on my N900 without melting it? Thanks

It's all very odd because I installed 30 and restarted, and have had no issues thusfar (the dimming screen was my own fault as I had added it to a script that was run at startup, and subsequently forgotten about it)? I did install everything kernel-power related, including kernel-power-headers, which I don't think is brought in automatically if updating via app manager (could be wrong though)..

Thanks. Have you seen a severe effect on battery life?

Oddly enough, if you apply suggestions given in the Wiki, you can see a notable IMPROVEMENT in battery life!

I have more than doubled my charge of the battery. It can last up to 40h for me nowadays. Normally 30h+.
