Yes, as root you copy the extracted camera-ui to /usr/bin.

It will not be available for use until you reboot, or do as root:

Code:
dsmetool -k /usr/bin/camera-ui

dsmetool -t /usr/bin/camera-ui

For me the focus distance is only displayed if I release the focus button which doesn't really make sense since the focus then is lost.

When I take photos I first halfpress to obtain focus and without releasing the focus button I then fully press the button to take the photo. Doing it this way I only get to see the focus distance after the photo is taken and not already when focus is obtained.

Does this work differently for others?

No, you are right. In the prior version (with focus distance
display under the focus frame) it was always visible.
And now it is hidden when autofocus is activated.

Here it shows the distance as soon as the focus is found, even if I keep it half pressed. My version is the one currently available in the CSSU (not the latest one available in post#1)

EDIT: meh, 0.001 seconds too slow

So is the current behaviour how you intend it to be or will you change it back to be as in the previous version?

My vote goes to the old behaviour
