I generally agree... the goal always is to pack as much functionality into as simple a UI as you can. The 747 cockpit is a last resort -- and we're not giving up yet. If we don't come up with anything simple, we'll probably do something like you or hellnick suggested. That said if there's an intelligent way of solving this that looks simple to the user, that'd also be pretty ideal. In other words, if you had a full time butler who did nothing but manage your n900 what could he do for you to make this simpler? Would he know which playlist you wanted to add the song to? Perhaps an even more important question is would you even need this functionality -- could it be replaced by something better, smarter, more powerful and still easier to use?

Just an idea...
A gesture (like you mentioned), or press and hold for a menu or somesuch is *probably* going to be the way we go -- at least in the short term.

Problem with swipes is that you need to carry a manual and, eventually, you will do something bad by accident.

How about power wheel interface? It would be swipe-like.

Hold thumb in center of - say - artwork. After 1 second, a power wheel pops up (round menu, with 8 buttons, N, S, E, W, NE, etc). Each would be large enough to have a big icon and a small text underneath that one only needs to read once.

For example, buttons could be:
Left: delete from current playlist
Right: add to playlist ... (pops up list of playlists)
Top: Edit artwork
Bottom: Cancel

Then add more as needed to the said wheel. It's menu-like, but can be operated by thumb. Say, bottom left and right could be next and previous song or something (though they already have buttons).

You could have the wheel be hold-and-release or push-select, like menus are on your average desktop (I'm on Windows, so, disclaimer).

Another idea is to reserve a swipe for a menu. For example, swipe down pulls the menu as if another window is above it, a la fcamera. Mighty useful and intuitive. It could be the same feel as the rest of the player has, with big menu bars and nice icons. Add to playlist, delete from playlist, etc. Swiping up would pull another window from below, that could be the current playlist, to jump songs.

Some work would be involved, but I believe this to be a great UI approach. You could tuck the artwork window to the left and so on.

I think I like that idea a lot more than the power wheel (most because I have a strong preference for rectilinear UIs that won't have icky aliasing issues). We'll throw some mockups together and post them on here for feedback.

We've decided against open sourcing the project for the time being. The code base is still rapidly maturing and evolving, not by accretion but often times by redesign. We're just not ready to begin accepting patches (or criticism ) just yet. We'll revisit this question down the line.

EDIT: Having tested a little further, I'm pretty sure this app won't do anything horrible to you. That said if your dad calls you up and tells you he hates you for eating his dreams, it's still not our fault.

I do like the fcamera UI of swiping up and down left and right to access menus. BUT...do we REALLY need that many menus?? This app as it is...is very slick and intuitive to use. Unless there are more hidden functions that you want to implement which require a whole set of menus for them...then sure. But as of now...swiping the art to change art and music with a tap or click of "play" button will suffice. As for adding random songs to playlist...you can create where tapping and hold for a menu to appear and select "add to playlist" will be just fine. As for other options like "fullscreen" or "landscape mode only," that can be added to the top black bar with an option for "option settings."

The swiping should only be used to change the BIG art and music. The whole reason you want to implement the fcamera UI is for easy access the menus by swiping left right up and down.....right? Well, it doesn't make sense because these menus are ALREASY EASY TO ACCESS. Are you talking about accessing album? Artist? Playlist A and B? Well....buttons are right on top...pretty easy to access..just tap on it?? Why do you need a whole set of menu of swiping??

The latest update is very stable and very usable. Would love to see this in the next update

- Instinctiv doesn't work in silent mode
- option to choose album under artist category
- volume control doesn't work while the screen is locked
- when you go back out from a list (song, artist, album) it goes back to the top of the list instead of going back to the previous location

Thanks to all the developers of instinctiv
