I have investigated the KDE hack, and determined that it will not meet my needs (nor is it as simple as "installing three debs"). But thank you for the suggestion.

what do you mean its not? u just download the debs and install them in a particular order... only complication is that u have to be willing to lose 1.5 gigs. Otherwise... it works surprisingly well.... i was skeptical at first but I loved KDE on a full desktop so this is quite impressive.

Just be sure to customize its appearance to ur personal liking.

I thought that must be created a community for get developed a whole new Office stuff only for Maemo, Open Office is very big and break the porpoise of a light hand held device. I'm talking about develop a basic progs like Google Docs, getting the mos useful features in and keep the apps in a small footprint with an usable and light interface.

I guess I am having trouble understanding where all the unhappiness comes from about the IT that I read. I never expected my N800 to be a laptop replacement, but it seems that many people are upset over what the IT will NOT do, but I am amazed by what it DOES do.

For an investment of $180 (I got mine on sale!) I have a device that lets me check emails, browse the Internet, view PDF files (I carry several for reference), take basic pictures, make a VOIP call, listen to Internet radio, work on spreadsheets with gnumeric, create notes with the Notepad application (even using the fingerpad touchscreen), watch full-length movies, listen to mp3 files, view pictures, record audio notes, hook up a BT GPS unit, etc., etc.

I never expected to have a full-sized linux PC in this form factor for this price. With the amount of software that has been, and is being, written for this device (for FREE!) my investment keeps getting better and better.

Sorry to rant, but I guess that it depends on what you expect going in...my expectations have been exceeded and continue to be exceeded by this device and all that it can do.

I second the nomination of Abiword as the IT's "Leading Vapourware No-Show."

I've done the Debian armel chroot/vncviewer hack explained here, and so I can run the standard Debian Sid version of Abiword on the xfce4 window manager. I'll probably try the KDE hack too. But that's not what I want.

I don't want a desktop interface, I like the Hildon interface on the IT. I want a hildonized word processor that can read and write some of the industry standard formats.

It's all about having the right expectations coming into this. I came into the N800 as a Zaurus user. I had access to pretty much all these applications, except that because of issues of speed and/or UI design they pretty much unusable without a stylus in hand and a lot of patience. For me the N800 does everything I expected of it and more, and we can count on it continuing to get better. I'm still not happy with some things, but that's why I keep hacking on it to make it work better.

It surprises me that anyone is seriously thinking of doing graphics work on their N8xx. Why do so many graphics pros use a 20-inch or so screen?

You don't want to do graphics, you just want Word compatibility? Then just do your text files on the N8xx and later transfer them to a big-screen computer.

Until we have glasses or something that allows us to see our text on big screens, I think we are kidding ourselves if we thnk we can do anything like pro word processing on tiny screens, no matter what programs we are running.

I have been doing just that for years on my Palm, just as I have been keeping track of my appointments and contacts, and keeping all of that data and those documents synced between my Palm and my various desktops. And yes, browsing the web, too.

That was my expectation: to replace my Palm. Had that expectation been satisfied, anything else would have been gravy.

There is LaTeX for the Nokia Internet Tablet? Where can I find it?!?!?

Well, obviously, bigger is better in that regard, but...

It's 800 pixels wide, yaknow? That's serious screen real estate, or it was not too long ago. My old laptop only did 1024. Graphics isn't out of the question. I know that's not the "intended purpose", but what I love most about my N800 and N810 is that they run Linux, with X11 -- aka, the full deal. I do wish they'd stayed closer to debian for more binary compatibility, but...

I am surprised by that page on Debian armel, actually -- I'm pretty sure you don't need vncviewer. OS2008 can handle normal X11 apps just fine, and in linux, the server and client layers can be separate. I can run Firefox or OpenOffice over ssh from my linux machines just fine, although the icons on the left are wrong.

Speaking of Abiword, I wonder why it hasn't been released yet. I was able to get it to install on my N810, and it seems fully hildonized -- but crashes when I try to save or load files. (You can load from the command line still.) It seems like it shouldn't be hard, but I have no idea what's involved.
