I just tried audacity. It runs, and I can open a file and see the wave on the screen, but no sound input/output. A bit of research discovers that it isn't compatible with the sound system the N8x0 uses. For some reason, it can't use esound or alsa! So that one's off the table.

It looks like jokosher is probably a good bet right now, since it uses gstreamer.

Just a note, any audio recording / editing app is going to be very slow on the tablet.

Well now that I had a day to play around with the N810 I'm starting to worry. So far it's not living up to it's hype. Loading a web page is OK, as far a speed, but clicking on a link to go to another website is almost impossible, it attempts to open the website but it just keep loading but never gets to the point where the website page is displayed, almost like it hangs. Compared to my experiences with the iPod touch, it sucks so far to tell the truth, and I know it's not my wireless connection because my Macbook is on the same wireless connection and clicking on a link to another website opens the site fast. I hope updating the firmware will fix this. If not, it's bye bye N810 and Hello iPod touch.

That's NOT normal behaviour.

Could you give examples of some sites where this happens, so we can check how they load on our tablets?

One thing that might help: click on the magnifying glass icon in the bottom right corner of the browser and make sure you have "Fit Width To View" switched OFF (i.e. unticked, unchecked).

Fit Width To View messes up websites and slows them down too, often causing them to hang. You should avoid it like the plague. It's a legacy feature from much older devices, it's not really much use on the tablets but it's stayed there through inertia.

Hello Krisse, thanks for the quick reply. I had "Fit Width To View" switched On, now it's switched OFF but no difference. I can't even load http:www.facebook.com. On the same wireless connection, there was no problem. It seems like the second website accessed doesn't load. e.g.
1. go to google.com --loads OK. Then...
2. go to facebook.com -- "connecting" with the bar moving back and forth forever. I give up then try to go back to google.
3. go to google.com --"connecting" with the bar moving back and forth forever.

I tried disconnecting than reconnecting the wireless. But that doesn't help. And after resetting my connection, if I go to Facebook first instead of Google, it never completely connects. At the top of the browser, it says "Welcome to Facebook". But the browser page display area is blank. At the bottom is the address/URL entry box, to the right of that is the status, hung on "Connecting". But it's not really hung cause that little blue bar is going back and forth.

I just tried google and facebook on both my N800 and N810 and it loaded in about 5 - 10 seconds without any problems at all.

Either there's something wrong with your tablet, or you have some settings that need altering, or there's something wrong with the connection itself.

Whatever the problem, your experience with the tablet is definitely not typical.

Did you try closing and reopening the browser after you switched Fit Width To View off?

Can you get ANY websites to load normally?

Are you running any applications in the background while you're using the browser?

Did you update the firmware and reformat the internal 2GB memory card before using the N810?

Regarding a reset, IMHO the best way to do that is to reinstall the firmware. If you've already downloaded the firmware the reinstallation shouldn't take too long.

(I even tried using my 3G wireless Softbank as a modem via bluetooth and the same thing.) Funny thing is before I went to work I could load SOME sites, now I can't load anything. so it7s getting worse. Could it be a cache problem?

I'm going to run the battery down to 0, recharge and update the firmware tomorrow. But formatting the internal memory will wipe of some stuff (maps and so on) that are in the memory.

If you're doing this entirely through a phone, your phone network may have blocks on their connections being used for modems.

It could be a phone network problem that you're encountering.

Have you tried using the tablet on an open wi-fi connection?

Do it! :-)

Don't do that!

Lithium batteries don't ever need to be run down like that. Just charge them as normal.

In fact running a lithium battery down too far may cause it to break irreparably.

You can download the maps again for free, and the internal memory can be backed up onto the internal memory card after you've reformatted it.

Note that the internal memory card (2 gigabytes) is a separate thing to the internal memory (256 megabytes).
