SORRY: As I had to buy the usb converter again as the one I got had some defect, I'm not able to try it now so just curious to know if it works coz I am using wireless router for access point to connect to wirelessly. So, what I mean is taking the ethernet cable from the router instead and connect to tablet and try..

I'm not meaning to speak for Rob, but generally, if your NIC won't get a usable connection when plugged directly into the modem, odds are it won't get one from the router. In troubleshooting you always eliminate as many devices as possible, get the situation resolved, then start adding them back in.

Anyways, thanks for the reply Texrat but I couldn't understand what you mean. Do you mean to use as minimum devices as possbile for troubleshooting and when it starts working start adding them and test? If, so, then thats the only wired network I have at my home (modem connected to router and different computers to router so i was wondering if I could use IT as one computer). thanks

GOT AN UNEXPECTED INFORMATION WHILE BOOTING:
I'm not trying to start new thread with this one only but it happened while I was typing in this thread. My IT's battery was flat so when I rebooted it showed me this information:
"USB networking is up with IP 192.168.10.1 telnet server started on port 23 not ssh keys, generating, may take a while...." And after a while.... "ssh server started on port 22 press 'esc' to disconnect and go back". Pressing 'esc' started it normally. So, just curious what made it show that message? thanks..

This sounds like Fanoush's initfs with usb networking recovery (?)

What I mean is get it working with the modem directly first... then it's easy to get it to work with router.

Well, I followed the latest wiki instructions, and installed everything, but I don't get either a Dummy or Wired connection available in the Connection manager. Has anyone run into this?

same thing happens to me. I'm going to try uninstalling all the scripts, re-running them and try running the scripts in /usr/sbin but i did that last time and didn't work. well i'll try again. i'll update my post in a bit

This is really screwy. Ever since installing the dbus scripts and usb LAN drivers I receive constant alerts that the network is about to be disconnected-- the popups interrupt everything I do.

I also tried running /usr/sbin/usbEthUp.sh and receive an error that there's no value set for auto_connect (I have it set to Always Ask).

However, a WIRED connection now shows automatically when I plug in the usb dongle with cat6 cable attached, but I can't browse the internet. All websites produce an error.

Tried usbEthUp.sh again. Different result this time: messages were--

Lease failed:
No lease, failing.

The results seem so random, as if I was on a different device every time I tried to connect. Very frustrating.

EDIT 2:

By monitoring xterm I see that the usb script is launched automatically when I plug in the dongle. However, now I get a new error:

"Unable to connect, no file system available"

...and the WIRED connection has vanished again.

Crazy.

EDIT 3:

After rebooting the device, xterm no longer shows the script autostarting.

I think I just lost some hair.

Some great news!!!

I had bought the Targus ACP50 usb notebook hub I mentioned recently. I tested it the other day on the N810 (via OTG connector combined with Motorola micro usb pigtail) and was able to read one of my flash drives.

The hub also has an ethernet jack so I just tried that-- and running the EthUp script got me a net lease on it! So at the very least the hub will work this way.

Now to figure out why the dongles didn't-- especially after another poster had success with them...

Targus hub just lost the lease after 2 minutes of connection, and can't reacquire. So something screwy is still going on...

well, something is screwed up alright: the micro usb port on my N810 no longer works.

Scratch that-- for some reason that utterly mystifies me, it started working again after I unplugged the charger connection. WTF???

Wow that's definitely unusual! It should go:
Connect USB device: "Device not supported" along with USB logo in top corner should appear instantly.
Wait a few seconds, then "No filesystem found/available" message should appear. If you check your wifi connection it should now automatically be connected to "WIRED".
Launch browser/app/etc and watch it work.

If you run from xterm you should probably will see the "auto_connect" error come up, but that's fine it doesn't affect anything (it's a leftover from the Chinook days that I just didn't pull out of the script yet). The DHCP should come back and tell you that it's gotten a lease after a few tries and you should be all set. One thing to keep in mind with USB stuff, especially networking, is that it's very power sensitive. That is, the tablet in it's power management wisdom will actually drop the current available to USB devices as the battery drains, which means if you're on like half battery power the network adapter might light up for a few seconds and then drop out. Sounds like what Tex was experiencing with the "connect/disconnect" multiple times by itself.
Beyond that, I'm not sure, sounds like quite a strange series of events. I've only had prolonged success with by USB100M (other adapters have done very odd things indeed), but I know others have said that things were working for them... In any case I'll double check the scripts and make sure I didn't mix anything up in the last update...

Thanks for the feedback Rob. You've given me ideas for further testing.

I'm mostly disappointed that the dongles don't work. I bought 4 solely based on the other poster's statement that they worked for him. I am not sure why they would for one person and not for another, unless I am experiencing hardware issues (I will perform further troubleshooting).

But at least the Targus hub works. I still find it odd that it won't, though, if I'm charging the tablet while it's connected to the hub. That to me is very strange.
