MAC-based ACLs are kinda senseless, but I agree with your statement that its nice they cannot follow your SIM/IMEI.

I'm registered with XOHM and Clear as a developer, but only so that I can get downloads and participate on their forums. Is anyone on talk.maemo.org familiar with the XOHM, Clear, or Sprint profile managers? As far as I can tell, they must be doing a combination of MAC-based ACLs plus public/private keys via profile manager.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX
is an incredibly thorough Wikipedia entry, but either they don't mention WiMAX security or I don't speak CIS well enough to understand:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX#I..._based_Network

Surely it isn't MAC alone?

No. As to the previous comments, although it's WiMax, the reason why the N810WE won't work on Clear is because that's just the radio access, there's other parts to network access.

pls post back with any news of N810 working on Clear.

See http://www.wimax.com/education/faq/faq29

AFAIK it isn't some kind of smartcard or SIM card. There is no such thing in a Nokia N810 WME, nor for WiMAX.

My HSPA/3G requires username/password but its standard one, because authentication is done earlier, based on SIM/IMEI.

Did you fill in a (username/)password? Aerea here (WorldMAX) requires username/password.

So I think you could use such on a different device. Maybe stick with same MAC addresses tho. If these can be overridden on WiMAX?

And the frequency has to be supported by the WiMAX chip.

Somewhat off the subject but I have not been able to log on to Xohm with my N810w. The Xohm reps have been trying for 3 months to find the reason. The network sees my mac address as one registered to a zyxel modem that belongs to another account, so it will not let me log on completely. That means I am able to view some web sites but not all nor can I do voip, sms and email. I have tried to do a mac clone but don't know the code.

Which websites are you able to view? Internal ones? I'd try creating a VPN or tunnel the traffic somehow

So HTTP works but HTTPS (HTTP over SSL) doesn't? Do you have a proxy configured in your browser?
